The Board of Directors for the Red Deer & District Community Foundation is made up of 12 community-minded professionals from across Central Alberta. Board terms are three years in length, and new members are welcomed each June at the Annual General Meeting.

Shawn Hamm

Shawn Hamm

Board Chair

Shawn was born and raised in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He moved to Red Deer with his family in 1992. Shawn has a diverse management back ground in Property, Building and Retail Management. For the past 7 years Shawn has served as Executive Pastor through Home Church Red Deer. He has a heart for Central Alberta and has volunteered his time at block parties in the community that provide families with a safe fun environment. Shawn has also travelled and trained leaders all over the world including India and Nepal. He also volunteered at the 2016 MasterCard Memorial Cup. This last fall Shawn was elected as Town Councillor for the Town of Penhold. He is involved in committees in Penhold and Red Deer including the Municipal Planning Commission. Shawn and his wife Sarah have two boys and love life! Shawn has a passion for Central Alberta and is excited to represent the Red Deer & District Foundation in building a stronger community.

Krista Nymark VandenBrink

Born and raised in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, Krista holds a BA (English Literature) from Saint Mary’s University and a BPR from Mount Saint Vincent University. In 2005, her Public Relations career brought her to Red Deer, where she currently resides with her husband Chad and young daughter Gretchen.

With years of facilitation, business management, consulting and strategic communications experience in municipal + federal government, not-for-profit, healthcare and sport, she eventually left her “desk job” to pursue an entrepreneurial endevour. She is a nationally published writer and currently, the 50% owner of Breathing Room Yoga Studio + Café.

Krista’s involvement with the Community Foundation began in 2017 when she was a recipient of a Women of Excellence Award in Entrepreneurship. She became the Chair of the Women of Excellence Committee in 2017 and was named Vice Chair of the Community Foundation Board in 2018. Krista’s social passions lie in human rights, gender equality and community building.

Kristen was born and raised in Olds, Alberta. She attended Red Deer College and obtained a diploma in Hospitality and Tourism right out of high school. After working in the hospitality industry and then the banking industry for a few years she returned to school at Red Deer College and then transferred to University of Lethbridge where she completed her Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in accounting. Upon completion of her degree she started at Pivotal LLP (previously Heywood Holmes & Partners LLP) where she obtained her Chartered Professional Accountant designation and is currently employed.

Patricia MacSween

Trish MacSween is a lawyer who has been pleased to call Red Deer her home for nearly 40 years after growing up on a Manitoba farm and attending the University of Manitoba. She has been actively involved volunteering in the community, both with her children’s activities when they were young, her church, and many different not-for-profit boards, such as the Arts Centre, Kevin Sirois, Normandeau Society, Waskasoo Environmental Education Society, Rotary, and especially as a member of the Board of Directors at the inception of the Red Deer Community Foundation. Trish considers herself honoured to have received the Red Hat award for Volunteer of the Year in 2009.
Trish’s interests are quite varied. She loves arts, music (both piano and choirs) and symphony. She volunteered to create choirs in any school that her children attended. She also enjoys many different sports such as skiing (downhill, x-country, water) and backpack hiking, skating, swimming, and scuba diving with underwater photography.
With the background of different interests and a wide variety of community involvement, Trish hopes to bring a balanced viewpoint to the Foundation Board, and is very excited to be a part of the Foundation’s growth over the next 3 years.

Bruce Buruma

Bruce is Corporate Secretary and Director of Community Relations for Red Deer Public Schools. He also serves as Executive Director for the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools.

Bruce has deep roots in Red Deer and is active in our community. He has served on the boards of Youth HQ, Red Deer College, the David Thompson Health Advisory Council plus other organizations and professional associations. Bruce is a member of the Rotary Club of Red Deer Urban Spirits and a Friend of Optimists International.

He recognizes the importance and value of the Community Foundation in creating a powerful legacy for individuals to enhance and enrich our community. As a Board member, Bruce hopes to raise the profile, assets and impact of the Foundation in our community.

Terry Cole grew up in Alberta spending some of his early years In Saskatoon where he graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a Commerce degree majoring in Finance and Accounting. Terry is a CPA, CMA and worked in the manufacturing industry as a controller for most of his career. For the past six years, he has taught accounting and finance at the Donald School of Business at Red Deer College. Terry has an MBA from Athabasca University. He has previously been a president of the Kinsmen and a Rotary Club member. Terry and his wife Bonnie reside in Olds.

Rob Litwinski

Born and raised in St. Paul, Alberta, Rob Litwinsky has called Red Deer ‘home’ for 20 years. He has given 25 years to Amateur Hockey – 18 of those years with Hockey Alberta and seven with Hockey Canada. He is presently starting his 15th season as Chief Executive Officer of Hockey Alberta. Rob has played integral management roles throughout his career in the fields of Marking & Events as well as Regulations and Administration. He sits on numerous boards and committees including the Red Deer Sport Leadership Society, Hockey Alberta Foundation and the 2021 IIHF World Championship Steering Committee. On top of work and volunteerism, Rob and his wife Marie keep extremely busy with their three teenage children.

Kim Berube

Kim Berube lives in Lacombe and has a broad business and community experience that includes sales, marketing, large event management and group facilitation. She served on the Lacombe Arts Endowment Board and Skatepark Committee. She owned and published of Real Woman on the Run Magazine from 2007 – 2010, before serving as Executive Director of the Lacombe and District Chamber of Commerce. This provided useful experience as a local business and community advocate, and an interest in municipal government. In 2017, fueled by a passion for mental and physical health, she became a fitness specialist and hardstyle Kettlebell instructor for Fit Body Boot Camp. Kim was Women of Excellence alum in 2009 and is proud to serve in the current RDCCF Board.

Kris is a Small Business Development Manager with Scotiabank supporting the Central Alberta region. This includes specializing in providing Advice & Solutions for Small Business and members of the Agriculture community enabling them to become better off. Throughout his Banking Industry journey over the last 10 years it has taken him across the Southern part of Alberta and now based in Lacombe. In 2018, it was highlighted by Kris being an inaugural recipient of Scotiabank’s Culture Catalyst award.

Throughout his professional journey it has also enabled Kris to recognize his passion for giving back to the community. This has included being President - Scotiabankers Association Executive Committee in Southern Alberta, Founding Member & Vice President of the Vauxhall & District Chamber of Commerce as well as the Treasurer of the Taber Vipers Swim Club.

Kris is deeply rooted in his beliefs for Diversity & Inclusion as well as Equality in the communities in which we live & work. This was a driving factor in wanting to be a board member with the Red Deer & District Community Foundation and be a part of the team to make a difference in the Central Alberta.

Lori Dufresne

A long time Red Deer resident, Lori retired late last year from the position of Event Coordinator for the Red Deer Hospice. During her six years at the Hospice she was continually inspired by the generosity of the Red Deer community for non-profits and hopes to broaden her knowledge and contribution to Red Deer’s many causes through involvement with the Community Foundation board.
Graduating from Broadcasting at Mount Royal University, Lori began her professional career with a national Advertising Agency in Calgary. A family transfer took her north to Fort McMurray where she worked in Communications and Public Relations for Keyano College.

Returning to Red Deer in 1993, Lori held contract positions fundraising for The Red Deer First Night Festival and as Marketing Manager and Exhibit Coordinator for Westerner Park.
On becoming an “empty nester” she returned to work full-time for the Red Deer Hospice Foundation.

She currently volunteers as a Wish Grantor for the Make-a-Wish Foundation and has most recently volunteered for the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Center and The Canada Winter Games.

Lori is looking forward to contributing to the positive impact The Red Deer Community Foundation makes on Red Deer and area.

Paul was born and raised in Red Deer but has had the good fortune with job opportunities to travel and conduct business with militaries around the world. He has negotiated large contracts in 6 of the 7 worlds continents. Recently Paul has taken a position selling Freightliner Chassis‘ for New West Truck Center to be closer to home. Paul has 3 children being raised in Red Deer and has a passion for charity instilled by his family’s long history of giving back to the community.

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Erin ventured west to Alberta in the late 1990’s to attend Calgary’s Mount Royal University and never looked back. Her and her husband have lived in Central Alberta since 2006 and are thrilled to raise a family in such an incredible piece of our country.
With a degree in Communications, Erin’s professional experience ranges from journalism to literacy, public relations to photography. In recent years she dedicated her time and efforts to her family while raising awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder through blogging and inclusion-based conversations. She has been with the Foundation since August of 2017 and enjoys working in a sector dedicated to the sustenance and growth of our beautiful community.

Sheralyn Acheson

Coordinator: Grants & Administration

Born in British Columbia, Sheralyn has also lived in Manitoba, as well as living abroad in South India for over 7 years with her husband Shawn and their kids. Although they also spent the first years of their marriage in Red Deer, her and her husband, along with their 4 transracially adopted children, have consistently been Red Deer residents for the last 6 years. Having had first hand experience in being a minority and trying to navigate how to live in a culture she wasn’t raised in while living abroad, she is passionate about advocating for diversity for all International residents who are a part of Western Cultures. She has many years experience in Administration and has loved learning all the Foundation has to offer the community since joining the team in the Fall of 2019.

Chantelle Bornn

Chantelle was born in Red Deer and currently calls Blackfalds home. She has been deeply involved in both Finance and Risk Management in the private sector since 2002. In 2014, she completed her Professional Bookkeeping certification through the RDC Donald School of Business. Chantelle and her husband Travis own and operate Bornn Bookkeeping and Central Alberta Exteriors in Red Deer and have a small daughter named Rose.

Chantelle has been actively involved in small business initiatives as a former Administrator and Director for the Blackfalds and District Chamber of Commerce and networking groups such as Women Out Working and Net-Works. With an extensive background in adult education, she is a frequent facilitator for various groups and is always interested in knowledge transfer.
