2008 – 2020 Award Recipients
Lifetime Achievement Recipient – presented by Mawer Investment Manager
Patricia Arango
Patricia Arango was born in Colombia. She is a Psychologist with a Masters Degree in Social and Community Psychology. In Colombia, she created a Non-profit, assisting women, kids and people in need. She was the Advisor to the Colombia Human Rights President and National Director of Indigenous Communities and Education. She was a University Professor for Manizales and Colombia University. Upon arrival in Canada, Patricia learned the language and culture. In Ontario, where she was a Registered Psychotherapist, she focused on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Solutions Focused Therapy. In 2014, Patricia accepted the position of Executive Director for the CASASC in Red Deer. In this role, she demonstrates her exceptional skills as a leader, innovator and pioneer. Patricia’s mother and inspiration, taught her the importance of respect, compassion and helping. This ideology paved the road for Patricia’s mission in life, helping others.

Michelle Brown
Michelle Brown is a well-respected leader and passionate ambassador in the agriculture industry. After a successful career as an entrepreneur she sold her business and has continued to work with Central Alberta Co-op, where she currently holds the position of Agro Division Manager. Michelle has contributed positively and passionately in her 30-year professional career. She successfully coached a ringette team to Nationals, volunteers in fundraising and various charities; the Canadian Food Grains Bank being one. Michelle is an advocate for the mental health of Canadian producers and a promoter of farm safety. Through her knowledge of the industry and genuine care for the people she works and volunteers with, she is an admired member of the community.

Laurie Maetche
Laurie Maetche loves teaching and promoting enthusiasm for music. She encourages others to reach for their potential, and this ensures she has a full teaching studio throughout the year. Having attained a Bachelor of Arts in 2011 with a focus on violin and viola performance, she is now challenging herself to finish her piano performance. Laurie started teaching music privately as a teenager and has been able to mentor hundreds of students over her ongoing career of more than 35 years. She can’t conceive of a more rewarding career than what she has done and is continuing to do.

Kathy Lalor
Kathy Lalor is a well-respected teacher, coach, and life-long advocate for physical health and wellness. Starting her career at West Park Junior High School in 1980, Kathy transferred to Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High school in 1992 where she continues to teach today. Having coached high School Basketball for 27 years, track and field for 26, and offering basketball camps for 12 years, her impact on multiple athletes is immeasurable. Kathy’s volunteer efforts include serving as Commissioner of the CASAA Basketball League, serving on HPEC’s Organizing committees, and volunteering for the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Kathy continues to teach, coach, and mentor selflessly, making a lasting difference in her community.

Lynne Stephenson
Lynne Stephenson is a pillar of the equestrian community. A fierce competitor, in 2018, Lynne won three of four Grand Prix classes at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, and placed second in the fourth class. Lynne was short listed in 2015 to represent Canada at the Mexico Nations Cup Final. Before merging to become co-operator of Wachter Horses in 2019, Lynne formed and ran Concorde Equestrian Training Stables. Lynne and show mount WH Coconut were recently recognized by CWHBA (Canadian Warmblood Horse Breeders Association) as Elite Ambassadors. As a coach, Lynne has served as chef d’equipe for NAYRC and had students represent at NAYRC (North American Young Rider Championships) and the FEI Children’s Finals, she has the unique ability to work with juniors, adult amateurs, and young professionals alike.

Mary Kemmis
Mary Kemmis, president of the Prairie Division of Black Press Media, was one of those kids who was always asking questions in class. That natural curiosity and a talent for writing led to her leaving the family farm in northern B.C. to enroll in the Langara journalism program. Mary’s career began as a reporter at her hometown paper, the Smithers Interior News, followed by the Cranbrook Daily Townsman, where she met her husband Mel. After a few years as a reporter and a move to the Lower Mainland of B.C., Mary made the switch to media sales and sales management, working for newspaper and radio companies across Western Canada and later Ontario. She returned to community newspapers as a publisher with Black Press Media in 2007.
Today she is Red Deer Advocate publisher and Black Press Media Prairie Division president.
Community Building – Presented by ATCO
Dianne Macaulay
Dianne Macaulay has lived in Central Alberta her entire life. She has been a Trustee for the Red Deer Public School District for over 15 years. She is an advocate for safer and more equitable classrooms for the diverse student population within our community. She is passionate about increasing awareness for the mental and physical health and well-being of students and other members within our community. As an active volunteer with Red Deer City Victim Services Unit (RDCVSU) and Educator/Liaison for the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre, she is passionate about helping others who are going through difficult situations and making our community a better place.

Natalie Paetz
Natalie Paetz co-founded Larkaun Homes at the age of 20 years old and has continued to build Larkaun Homes over the last 17 year to be one of the most decorated and established home building companies in Central Alberta. Not only is Natalie a dynamic businesswoman, she is a dedicated mother of two young kids, ages 4 and 2, and a wife. Over the years, Natalie has enriched the Central Alberta community by being involved with such initiative as the Red Deer Kinsmen Dream Home, Incoming President, President and Outgoing President with BILD-Central Alberta among other charitable causes and organizations.

Jacqui Renwick
Jacqui Renwick, an educator, a musician and actor, and a role model to many, is a respected member of the arts and educational community. Graduated from The University of Lethbridge with degrees in Education and Arts, Jacqui then went on to complete her Master’s degree in 2016. Her teaching experiences include teaching Drama, Tech Theater, Science, Leadership, and more. Jacqui has also coordinated in “The Vagina Monologues” to advocate against Sexual Assault in Central Alberta. Renwick has also directed her students in productions such as “Grease”, “The Wizard of Oz” and more. She was nominated for an Excellence in Teaching Award in 2011, achieved the 2019 SPARK Youth Champion Award from the Town of Sylvan Lake and Youth Services, and is continuously giving back to her students, colleagues and community. Words cannot describe the length that she goes to to support those around her. The educational community would never be the same without Jacqui.
Entrepreneurship – Presented by TD Bank
Jenna Stubbe
Jenna Stubbe has had a keen interest in birth work since she was very young, but didn‘t put this calling to use till she became a mother herself. In 2014, Jenna started serving families through their childbirth journeys, while learning and furthering her education in this area, which has included; a year-long mentorship and training with 17 year experienced Doula, Becky Purpur; Pregnancy Loss Mentor with the Institute for the Study of Birth; Breath & Death; Certifying Doula with Birth Arts International; Rebozo Training and Certification with Gena Kirby; Certified Sacred Pregnancy & Birth Journey Instructor; Birth Art Mentor Certified with Birthing From Within; Placenta Training with Placenta Benefits; Pregnancy & Women’s Health seminars with Clinical Herbalist, Abrah Arneson. Since then, Jenna has grown these and her artistic skills into two thriving and growing businesses, that dedicate themselves to the growth of childbirth awareness.

Shannon Lirondelle
Shannon Lirondelle has been a member and volunteer of the Junior Forest Wardens for 14 years, and has contributed countless hours volunteering to lead and coordinate all aspects of the Red Deer Woodchucks club since stepping into the club coordinator role in 2018. Shannon has served on numerous regional committees and boards and has led initiatives to help other JFW clubs in the region thrive. She has also volunteered and facilitated warden involvement in environmental stewardship initiatives through partnerships with groups including Pheasants Forever and Red Deer Fish and Game. In her day job at the Red Deer Public library, Shannon has developed a number of innovative experiential programs designed to connect families to nature and inspire positive environmental action.

Dr. Jody Carrington
For over 15 years, Dr. Jody Carrington has assessed, treated, educated and empowered some of our most vulnerable and precious souls. She is a child psychologist who believes their success lies in the holy work of the people who hold them; educators, parents, first responders, and foster parents. Before starting her own practice and nation-wide speaking, Jody worked at Alberta Children’s Hospital dealing with families suffering trauma learning a signature lesson: we are wired to do hard things and wired for connection. Jody received her Bachelor of Arts with Distinction from the University of Alberta. She completed a year-long internship with the RCMP working alongside families struggling with chronic illness at the Ronald McDonald House. She received her Master’s and PhD in Psychology at the University of Regina. Her book, Kids These Days: A Game Plan for (Re)Connecting with those we Teach, Lead & Love (2019) is on Amazon’s Best Sellers List.

Raelynn Notley
Raelynn Notley is a wife, mother of two teenagers and a dedicated active member of her community. She is a registered social worker and has practised in Central Alberta for more than 20 years. Her passion: promoting mental health and wellness in others. Raelynn’s goal is to provide opportunities for children, youth and families to develop skills to maximize their potential. She is a compassionate leader who encourages her community to build a solid foundation of wellness. Her mission is to increase opportunity for positive connection and empowerment. Volunteering her time on numerous boards and projects helps to strengthen these opportunities. She is proud to reside, practice and volunteer in the community where she was born and raised.

Brittany Lausen
Brittany Lausen is a life-long learner and currently a Bachelor of Business Administration student at the Donald School of Business after completing the University Transfer Diploma in Elementary Education. In 2018 Brittany received the Red Deer College Outstanding Student Award, the Students’ Association Student of the Year Award, Mental Health Initiative Award, and the Laurence Decore Scholarship for Student Leadership. Brittany enjoys working with children and worked at Summer Camps for 6 years. Currently, she volunteer-tutors for Learning Disabilities Alberta. Brittany was born in Red Deer, but grew up in Calgary. She moved back to Red Deer to start school, and now lives with her husband, Erik, and dog, Sage, in Airdrie, where she commutes from each day.
Inspiration Award – Presented by the Women of Excellence Committee
Donna Bishop
Donna Bishop’s life has been anything but what most people would consider mainstream or ordinary. She is a wife and mother. She was raised in two cultures. Her career of service has spanned over three decades and has been committed to educational methods that will assist First Nations familiarization with a culture nearly lost during the previous century. She is an artist and has not limited her creativity to her singing/song writing talents. She is a skilled educator with an understanding in traditional First Nations teaching methods and their application to main stream problem solving in today’s society. She has incorporated spirituality into the everyday struggles for those whom have been without traditional guidance. She has been recognized and utilized nationally for her innovative teaching methods. She encourages and facilitates the integration and understanding of First Nations culture with modern Canadian living.

Lifetime Achievement Recipient
Doreen Bergum
Born in an era when it was illegal to express one’s Métis culture, Doreen Bergum has become an inspiration to Métis peoples. Doreen dove into her culture at age 55, when laws changed. She learned music, dances, and handicrafts secretly shared in her childhood. Currently, Doreen is the Métis Elder for the Homeland of the Métis Nation of Alberta Region #3 and an internationally recognized jigger. She shares her culture with students in schools, Colleges and Universities and creates storyboards and museum displays. Through her prayers, beading and jigging, she has, one event at a time and one person at a time, fostered understanding of and pride in the Métis culture locally, and nationally. Doreen is a strong Métis advocate.

Theresa “Corky” Larsen Jonasson
Theresa “Corky” Larsen Jonasson is a life-long resident of Red Deer. She is a respected Elder and strives to be a bridge between the indigenous and non-indigenous communities. She is passionate about social justice, Reconciliation, encouraging youth, honouring diversity and her traditional Indigenous teachings. Corky provided traditional leadership with the ”Walking with our Sisters” ceremony in Red Deer and as a result, was recruited to the WWOS National Collective which focuses on the Missing and Murdered Women Awareness Movement. She is also a member of the Alberta Justice Elders circle. Her work with many community groups plays a strong role in encouraging individuals to reclaim identity and work towards Reconciliation. She is truly an asset to the Central Alberta Community.

Donna Trottier
Donna Trottier is a professional agrologist with over 30 years of experience working in multiple fields of the agriculture industry. Donna was instrumental in the design and development of the AgSafe Alberta Society, supporting farms and ranches across the province. She worked with 32 industry producer groups and multiple stakeholders to define & implement the sustainable platform for the society. Prior to that, Donna established Tatonga Consulting in Red Deer to assist organizations with risk management and strategic marketing initiatives. She’s worked as a Water Conservation Specialist with the City of Red Deer, Watershed Coordinator with the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance and Conservation Coordinator with Red Deer County. She demonstrates passion and is a true leader in the Alberta Agricultural community.
Arts, Culture and Heritage Recipient
Heidy Panameno
A graduate of the Emily Carr University with a major in Film and Video production, Heidy’s inspiration comes from her parents, Saint Romero, and her high school teacher, Melrose Randell. Heidy was the recipient of the Millennium Scholarship and received an Alberta Motion Picture Association Nomination for her first pilot film “Escape”. The TELUS StoryHive Documentary Fund awarded Heidy a grant to produce “Breaking Stigmas”, a project focusing on the strengthening of Culture in Central Alberta. A recipient of several awards, Heidy’s biography has been preserved in the Women’s Art Museum of Canada. A published author through Random House/Penguin and Exlibris Publishers, Heidy has a business certificate, and is the owner of Panameno Productions.

Tammy Cunnington
It was 36 years ago that Tammy was injured when a plane crashed at the Ponoka airshow. From near death at age six to a Paralympian at 40, Tammy brings a message of perseverance. In Tammy’s sensational para-swimming career she has represented Canada at the 2016 Paralympics in Rio, earned four Canadian records and one World record. Now she has her sights set on Tokyo’s 2020 Paralympics! Tammy is an advocate for health, fitness and sport, encouraging others by being an ambassador for Fast and Female and The Rick Hansen Foundation and volunteering with the 2019 Canada Games. Tammy’s motto is Passion = Victory, and she applies this to all areas of her life and works to instill it in those around her.
Business and the Professions Recipient
Suzanne Alexander-Smith
Suzanne Alexander-Smith, is dedicated to her profession, to life-long learning, and to family and friends. Suzanne has tremendous compassion for those facing challenges, particularly in their ability to access justice. She has not only obtained academic achievements, but in her profession as a lawyer, has been selected to receive the designation of Queen’s Counsel for her outstanding contributions to legal and public life. In addition, she has been recognized by the Alberta Law Society for her work in the area of pro bono legal services. Since being called as a lawyer in 1995, she has garnered the respect of her colleagues and the Court and is a sought after board member for local organizations. Simply put, Suzanne is a woman of excellence.
Community Building Recipient
Sherri Smith
Sherri Smith is an accountant, a wife, and mother – and for 30 years she has been a volunteer of the United Way of Central Alberta. During this time she has served as an executive member, sat on the Citizen Review Committee, Campaign Division Chair and Campaign Co-Chair. She has been honoured with two Mayor’s Recognition Awards for Voluntary Service and the Beta Sigma Phi Lady of the Year Award. In 2003, she received the Frances E. Wagner Woman of Achievement Award for her passionate support and volunteerism with the Soroptimist International of Central Alberta. Sherri’s motto is ‘For a community to be great, it has to be great for everyone’; a motto that she works to make a reality.

Sue Neufeld
Sue Neufeld is an outstanding citizen, business owner, philanthropist and family member. In 1990 she and her husband began the career of a lifetime when they built True-Line Homes and they continue to be renowned in their field. Over the years they have received multiple awards within the sector. She has made many powerful contributions to the communities in and around Red Deer. In 2012 Sue made her first trip to El Salvador when she headed True-Line’s El Salvador Project and by 2015, the project had provided 100 homes to people in need. Sue has donated much of her time and money to the Kids with Cancer Foundation, women’s shelters, and people in need. She is an amazing mother, friend, community member, role model and woman.

Beverly Manning
Bev Manning has served her community through her involvement in Red Deer Public Schools District as a Trustee for 23 years, including nine years as Vice Chair, and five as Board Chair. Bev continues to break new ground, show vision, determination and initiative in making Red Deer a better place. She played a powerful role in the way the district shaped its Education Plan and has been pivotal in key district initiatives including the School Nutrition Program, Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Policy and the Valuing Mental Health Initiative. Bev is a servant leader, who strongly advocates for the voice of parents, the importance of locally elected school boards, public education, and ultimately for the children and youth of Red Deer.
Entrepreneurship Recipient
Denise Harty
Denise Harty is a single mother of three daughters, an assistant coach for Sting Ringette, owns four locations of Fit Body Boot Camp in Lacombe, Red Deer, Ponoka and Innisfail and employs 18 full time staff. Denise is a hardstyle Russian Kettlebell Level 2 Instructor, one of only a handful in Canada, and also holds CanFitPro certification, B.Sc in Holistic Nutrition and a Level 1 Precision Nutrition certificate among others.. Denise’s leadership and vision for creating outstanding health and strength is made real through the passion and commitment of a deeply loyal and dedicated team. It doesn’t matter which of her gyms you walk into, in each location, people will have the same experience: safe, inclusive and welcoming.

Sharina Kennedy
Sharina Kennedy’s passion for connecting people with nature makes her perfect for her role as Parks Planner for Alberta Environment and Parks. She acts on local environmental issues by volunteering on Waskasoo Environmental Education Society’s Board of Directors and The City of Red Deer’s Council Committee for the Environmental Master Plan. While her undergraduate studies focused on biology, Sharina’s enthusiasm for getting people excited about nature led her to complete a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Education and Communication. She has worked across Canada doing environmental management, planning, education, communication and public engagement with a variety of audiences. For fun, Sharina cooks creative dishes from local produce and wild game; runs; knits; and does many outdoor recreation activities with her family.
Health and Wellness Recipient
Vanessa Higgins-Nogareda
Vanessa Higgins-Nogareda has always been a champion for equality, respect and kindness. After graduating from nursing in 2005, she began her career with AHS and later joined the RDC teaching faculty. In 2013, Vanessa traveled to Kenya to deliver health care in rural areas and returned to the village she was born in. She visited the school her parents helped build and saw the desperate need for sanitation and supplies. Vanessa raised enough money to supply the village with 40 bunk beds, four bathrooms, 20 desks, books and uniforms. In 2017, Vanessa launched “Time is Muscle”, bringing awareness and advocacy to optimize cardiovascular outcomes for Central Albertan’s.Vanessa also danced her way to victory at the 2019 Celebrity Dance Off this past spring.
Human Services Recipient
Karyn Kay
Karyn is a highly dedicated and motivated wife, mother and Unit Commander in the RCMP. After obtaining a diploma in Social Work from Mount Royal College in 1998, Karyn joined the RCMP and embarked on an intensive career dedicated to providing support, counsel and opportunity to individuals impacted by domestic violence. Over the last four years Karyn has developed and implemented a Youth Intervention and Diversion Unit in Red Deer, focusing on connecting with at-risk youth and providing them with the supports and direction necessary to keep them from becoming involved with criminality. Her efforts have not only had significant impact on the community of Red Deer, but her model is being adapted by detachments around Alberta.

Gillian Wallis
Gillian Wallis has been the Program Coordinator at Street Ties Youth Outreach with Vantage Community Services since 2008. Gillian graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. Her career began in Red Deer as a youth worker at Youth HQ from 2006-2008. As supervisor at Street Ties, Gillian provides education to the community on issues that affect youth, facilitated Art in the Park, and co-developed/produced Red Deer’s first resource guide for high risk youth and young adults in our community. In addition, Street Ties received the national Eva’s Initiative Award for Innovation during Gillian’s leadership. Gillian is also a representative for a number of community committees focusing on the well-being of vulnerable populations.

Tatyanna Stoesz
Tatyanna Stoesz is a kind, generous and dedicated Grade 11 student and a well-respected leader at H.J. Cody High School in Sylvan Lake. She is an honour roll student who is active member of her school’s Student Voice leadership team, is the Breakfast Program Coordinator at her school, and performs regularly in H.J. Cody drama and music department productions and concerts. She is also a very involved in her community with current positions volunteering for the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library, Klassic Kennels, the Sylvan Lake Seniors Centre, her church, and House of Music camps for kids. She has musical and theatrical talent, but her real talent is passion for service, helping her peers, and dedication to her community.

Ola Zein Alabdin
In 2016, Ola left Syria as a refugee to come to Canada with members of her family. Ola is proud of her culture and history, passionate about sharing her life journey, and has dedicated herself to speaking at many public forums in Red Deer and Central Alberta. She is a motivated, compassionate, and strong 20 year-old community leader and is currently a student at Red Deer College. Through her community work, she has developed leadership skills and is an outstanding role model for youth and adults alike. She has a commendatory attitude and is grateful to Canada for the opportunities given to her and her family. She would like to study medicine to become a doctor.

Lifetime Achievement Recipient
Lynne Mulder
Born into a family who believes in hard work, education, compassion and community, Lynne’s commitment and passion to ensure all the citizens of Red Deer are offered the best quality of life possible comes naturally. With a PhD in Nursing and a Masters in Education, Lynne continues to support and volunteer with various organizations such as Vantage Community Services, United Way of Central Alberta and the Canadian Mental Health Association- Central Alberta Region. A strong community supporter, animal lover and a generous soul, Lynne displays compassion, kindness, determination and dedication to creating a vibrant Central Alberta. A strong and determined leader, from nurse to Vice President of Red Deer College, to Red Deer City Councillor, Lynne continues to make a positive impact in our community, no matter what capacity.

Leona Staples
Leona is a fourth-generation farmer dedicated to teaching and sharing the history of farming and growing food in Central Alberta. Leona and her husband Blaine own and operate The Jungle Farm, creating family memories with an authentic farm experience. She began influencing the agricultural industry in her teens, as a very active and award winning 4-H member. After graduating from the University of Alberta, she worked with Alberta Agriculture, and in 1996 moved to the family farm to raise their three boys. Together they made changes to create what The Jungle Farm is today. Leona serves as an executive board member for the Innisfail Growers Cooperative, a founding board executives of Calgary Farmer’s Market, and current Chair of the Olds College Board of Governors.

Louise Stuppard
Life-long participant in the Red Deer Youth and Community Orchestra, Louise took over developing and conducting the RYCO in 2007 from her mother, Antoinette, who founded the organization in the 1960’s. Louise led the RYCO with the vision to provide an opportunity for unique musical and educational experiences for young musicians in Central Alberta. Louise is a contributing member of the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra, holding the principal second violin position for over 20 years. RYCO consists of approximately 50 musicians, some as young as 6 years old. The RYCO raises funds annually and contribute the funds raised through their performance to a worthy cause –a model that Louise worked diligently to put into place that benefits philanthropic causes in Alberta and around the world.

Brandi Heather
Brandi is an educator at Red Deer College, an Adapted Physical Activity and Play Development Specialist. Brandi holds a Master’s Degree in Physical Education, a Bachelor of Education in Secondary Physical Education and Special Education, and was instrumental in building a successful Adapted Physical Education Diploma Program at Red Deer College. She is a certified Foundations of Play Therapy and Advanced Play Therapy Techniques Facilitator, and a NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills and Coaching Young Athletes (Special Olympics) Course Facilitator. Brandi is an international speaker for play based programs and has helped school districts across Alberta understand Adapted Physical Activity to improve academic and physical curriculum goals. Brandi is the proud parent of two wonderful girls (Megan & Kiera) and loving wife and partner to Ken.

Barbara King
Barb is a Partner at BDO Canada LLP. She has distinguished herself as a subject matter expert in agriculture, and, in addition to becoming one of the youngest female professionals promoted to partner at BDO Canada LLP, was appointed as the Agriculture Leader of Alberta. Her strong business acumen and knack for modern leadership impress upon the minds of many developing CPAs whom she mentors. Barb has been an active and engaged member in her community. By serving in various roles with the Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES) – including Director and Treasurer, and supporting Dress for Success in Red Deer, Barb has dedicated countless hours to women’s causes and fundraising efforts in Central Alberta. Her positive impact in the workplace and the community is tremendous.

Christine Moore
Educated in languages at the University of Liverpool, Christine and her husband David moved to Central Alberta 23 years ago to pursue business interests. Their three children attended Red Deer Catholic Schools where Christine was elected to the Board of Trustees and became Chair. She was appointed to the RDC Board of Governors in 2011 and the Central Alberta Children and Family Services Society, which she now co-chairs. She is also one of the founders of the Red Deer Catholic Education Foundation. In 2013, she was elected to Red Deer County Council, and is currently serving her second term. Christine supports the region in a variety of ways, most notably spearheading the Sheraton Celebrity Dance Off which has raised over two million dollars to date.

Wanda Christensen
Wanda began teaching in 1987 and has served in several capacities, including a First Nations settlement, inner city junior high, remote K-12 school, and as an Assistant Principal. A lifelong learner she has achieved three degrees: Bachelor of Education, Masters of Education, and Masters of Psychology. Her skill, care and concern has impacted children and families throughout her 30 years as an influential educational leader. For 18 years, Wanda has fulfilled the role as associate superintendent of student services in Wolf Creek and Chinook’s Edge school divisions and promoted a developmental-relational response to children and youth who present with significant social emotional challenges. She loves spending time with her family and friends, and enjoys being outdoors tending to her small farm near Rimbey.

Denise Gagne
Denise is a music specialist with 39 years’ experience teaching band, choir and classroom music from pre-school to grade 12. She has degrees in music and education, as well as Level 3 training in both Kodaly and Orff. Her Choirs and bands have won many awards at music festivals and have performed for various events, on national radio and even for the Queen. Denise is a very successful entrepreneur, who is the owner and managing editor of Themes & Variations right here in Red Deer. Denise is also a mother of 3 adult children and has 5 beautiful grandchildren and one more on the way. She spends all of her spare time with her grandchildren and loves every second of it!

Bridget Allen
At the young age of 15, Bridget has a 2nd degree junior black belt. She is currently training for an adult blue belt in Goshinkan Japanese Jujitsu. Her love of Jujitsu is shown by assisting kids aged 3-12 in the Jujitsu classes. Middle school was where Bridget found her love for woodworking; she has been an active participant with Sawing for Schools, a program at Central Middle School, where students take down trees at end of life, and salvage and recycle the lumber to create a value-added product. She takes pride in the group’s belief of ‘giving old trees, new roots’. At home, with 4 siblings and a 5th on the way, she’s always there to help, minimal questions asked. She’s a young and ambitious young woman.

Maureen Gustafson
Maureen moved to Olds shortly after graduating from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. She quietly exudes spiritual health, one of the seven dimensions of health. Her own health and beliefs are apparent whether she is engaged with her family, church or the larger community. To support her family and her community, Maureen became a volunteer extraordinaire; volunteering in leadership and other positions for eighteen years at her children’s schools, over twenty years at her church and in music and sports organizations with which her family were involved. Intuitively, Maureen modelled spiritual health values in all her volunteer activities. Maureen encourages innovation in ideas and action, in completing tasks, no matter how monumental and in ensuring everyone celebrates their successes.

Karen Simon
Serving our community for over 35 years as a member of the RCMP, Karen leaves an everlasting and positive impact with those she interacts with. She has had a major influence in the workforce and community for women of all ages and stages, while also reaching major accomplishments herself – becoming the first women to rise through the ranks within Alberta’s detachments, to then become a commissioned officer in Alberta. In addition to serving her community through Southern Alberta’s Critical Incident Response Team, she continued taking on roles within an organization historically dominated by male influencers, mentoring other women, and serving her community through multiple volunteer positions such as the Tournament of Hearts, Memorial Cup, Women’s Outreach Society and the Air Cadets.

Jaycee Bourke
Jaycee is a highly motivated young lady who loves assisting people when she has the opportunity, she is currently 17 years old and an honors student in Grade 12 at LTCHS. Jaycee is actively involved as VP of the Leadership Program at school, and is in charge of student community involvement. During the summer break Jaycee is a volunteer camp counselor at Camp Alexo where she makes a positive impact on the youth attending the camp. Jaycee is looking forward to a career in nursing and has applied at The Red Deer College Nursing Program. Jaycee has volunteered with many organizations including the Kinsmen Club & Kinette Clubs at many community events, The Red Deer Boys and Girls Club, Youth HQ, Festival of Trees.

Ireland Murray
Ireland was born on November 2, 1998 in Wainwright, Alberta. Ireland graduated from Hunting Hills High School and is currently attending University of Calgary, taking a dual degree in Bachelor of Education and Bachelor of Arts. Throughout high school, Ireland participated in and helped organize school fundraising events, received several academic and leadership awards, and scholarships. This year, Ireland will be travelling with VESA (Volunteer Eco Students Abroad) to South Africa for two weeks, helping with the construction of houses, classrooms and bathroom blocks. She will be working with children in schools teaching English, basic sanitation, hygiene and nutrition and will be volunteering at a wildlife conservation for big cats and crocodile enclosures. Ireland is a great role model and she strives to include everyone.

Nora Styner
Nora is an example of a highly committed community volunteer. She’s been volunteering for 25 years with the Link to Health Program, 40 years with the Red Deer Hospital and continuously with the Sunnybrook Church. She demonstrates sincere passion for the Link to Health Program as she understands the importance of exercise. She is very encouraging and lets participants work “at their own pace.” As the facilitator for this exercise program, Nora has rarely missed a session since the day she started. When her son became a quadriplegic, she never gave up her voluntary work. Her years of experience has been a valuable asset to participants and organizations in our community; she absolutely deserves to be recognized!

Tracy was born in Olds and grew up on the family farm. She was active in figure skating and 4-H. Tracy’s passion is raising purebred seedstock and mentoring youth. She has served on a variety of livestock industry associations and committees. Tracy is a recognized communicator, serving as an MC or announcer at events. Tracy is proud to serve as Event Manager at Olds Regional Exhibition contributing to authentic and relevant community and industry programming. Tracy is a genuine advocate for agriculture and rural community development. She is recognized as a dynamic leader of youth program development and production. Tracy’s dedication to fostering youth opportunities ensures that rural communities continue to showcase talented young producers and professionals.

Diana Anderson
Diana was the Exhibits Coordinator at the Red Deer & District Museum for thirty years. At present, she is the Coordinator for the Red Deer Arts Council and is their sole employee. She is responsible for coordinating all administrative, communications, Board activities, and Kiwanis Gallery activities as well as supporting local and regional artists. Her past and present service includes: acting as the Gallery Coordinator for the Bilton Centre for Contemporary Art in Red Deer; a partner in the interior design firm Always Timeless Designs; a freelance curator helping artists to realize their business potential; and a museum consultant. She also served on the Alberta Museums Association Board, Red Deer Tourism and the Alberta Culture Days Committee in Red Deer. Diana is creative and has a positive attitude, eager to take on new experiences.

Janice is a spirited community leader in the public and non-profit sectors, as an entrepreneur, and in governance roles on boards. She role models an integrated life that balances her unwavering commitment to her family, as well as commitment to social responsibility. Janice is the Director, Community Relations at Red Deer College, since 2011. Prior to stepping into that position, she was a member of the Board of Governors for RDC for 6 years, and served as the Chair for 1-1/2 years. Prior to RDC, Janice was the Executive Director of the Red Deer & District Community Foundation for 10 years. Janice and her husband Al live in Innisfail. They are the proud parents of three adult children, who are involved citizens making meaningful contributions in their own circles.

Susan Samson
Susan is a friend, wife, mother and grandmother and has been a resident of Sylvan Lake for 37 years. Her proudest accomplishment is daughter Laura and her two lovely grandchildren. Her passion is making the Town of Sylvan Lake a strong, robust community for all residents and visitors. From 1980 to 2005, Susan owned and operated Cast Away Sports in Sylvan, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. Susan’s accomplishments include: Municipal Councillor, 1986-1989; Mayor, 2007-2013; Citizen of the Year, 1994; Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, 2012. She is instrumental in building of the 2nd Light House in the community. She is the Chair of the Community Committee for the new “Advanced Ambulatory Care Clinic” for Sylvan Lake and Area, scheduled for opening in 2018. Susan leads by example and is a tireless volunteer.

Dorothy (Dot) Negropontes
Sadly Dorothy Negropontes, or Dot as she was so affectionately known, did not make it to this year’s Women of Excellence Awards Gala. She passed away from health complications, on Monday, May 25th 2017 at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary with her beloved husband and son at her side. Dot was a true Woman of Excellence, she led leadership presentations; initiated school reform and evaluations; and conducted extensive educational research. She mentored rural educators and worked with education sector partners in Alberta to develop an online toolkit to support collaborative practices as well as an online toolkit to support human rights education and vulnerable groups in schools. Throughout her career as an educator with Chinook’s Edge School Division, Dot championed opportunities for all rural learners.
As Executive Director of the Olds College / Chinook’s Edge joint venture Community Learning Campus project, Dot focused on all learners in the public system. Dot volunteered as the Canadian liaison for Anonymous Good, a global philanthropy group that celebrates everyday acts of good and turns them into global acts of change. Dot exemplified kindness in all that she did and will leave behind a lasting legacy of excellence.

Bonnee Gregg & Krista Vandenbrink
Bonnee and Krista co-own Breathing Room Yoga Studio and Café. The studio is entering its sixth year of business. Both Bonnee and Krista value their business relationship and how it allows them to be present in their family lives. They both share an entrepreneurial spirit and deep love for all things domestic which led to their desire to create a studio which incorporates a café. Breathing Room is a family friendly studio that fosters human connection, healing, community and personal development. The studio has been very successful. In August 2016, they expanded to meet the needs of our growing Red Deer yoga community. Both are strong advocates for local businesses and entrepreneurs and have provided support to numerous causes and community events.

Nicola (Nikki) Cook
Dr. Nikki Cook graduated from McGill University in 1998 with a PH.D. in Environmental Soil Science. Throughout her career, she has been involved in the environmental industry by working to clean up contaminated soils and deal with hazardous waste as a consultant, researcher, and educator. She has authored and coauthored various papers related to environmental reclamation and remediation and has presented at conferences in North America, Europe and Australia. Anyone familiar with Dr. Cook knows that she is passionate about preserving and protecting our soil; an important component of environmental sustainability. She continues to be an inspiration to her students, fellow instructors and industry peers, through her stewardship for our environment.

Katherine Kemmere
As a Licensed Practical Nurse, it was Kathy’s passion for people that led her to a palliative care conference in 1998. It changed her life. She immediately signed up for training as a Palliative and Pastoral Volunteer. She then became keenly interested in grief and bereavement support. In 2001, Kathy initiated bereavement programs in Olds and has since supported countless people from across Central Alberta. For the last decade, she has been an instrumental member of the Olds & District Hospice Society, developing a model of rural palliative care for her own and other rural Alberta communities. Kathy was chosen as Humanitarian of the Year in 2014 in Olds. She continues to volunteer her time to improve hospice palliative care.

No judgement. No pretense. 100% genuine. Whether leading Safe Harbour as Executive Director, working with staff and the Board, or sitting on the curb listening to a member of our community’s most vulnerable struggling to find their way out of darkness, Kath Hoffman IS a Woman of Excellence. At Safe Harbour, Kath encourages others to shine their lights on those burdened with disconnect from family, poverty, homelessness, complex mental and physical health challenges, addiction and trauma. She reminds us that it’s not important what substance people use to soothe their pain, their story is what’s important. That kind of acceptance and love is powerful. It’s contagious. And it embodies how Kath lives her personal and professional life.

Lucienne Henry
Lucienne is 19 years old, and currently lives in Red Deer at the Red Deer College residence. She has just completed her second year of a five year combined degree in psychology and sociology. She has one piece of published work in the RDC AGORA Conference and is currently in the process of publishing a second piece. Lucienne is heavily involved in the RDC residence, and she is the first RDC student to attend the International STARS College conference and is the summer conference coordinator. Lucienne loves being involved in the community and tries to make a meaningful impact wherever she is. She has volunteered for the Clive Breakfast Program, Tees Agricultural Society, Clive Lions, Valley Spotlight Newspaper and 4-H Alberta.

Elizabeth Plumtree
Elizabeth and her husband, David Plumtree, came to Red Deer in 1973. She became a crusader to save the old Cronquist farmhouse and with a core of other volunteers, moved it across a frozen Red Deer River. Over the next three decades, Elizabeth tirelessly promoted Red Deer’s diversity and multiculturalism while showcasing the City’s pride in its own heritage through programs and events at Cronquist House such as the Bowers Pond Canada Day celebrations. She became the face and name behind the house and turned it into the jewel of the City of Red Deer’s parks system it is today. Now retired, Elizabeth has continued to provide leadership, guidance and experience to the Society as a board member and volunteer.

Nellie Watson
Nellie was born a humble farm girl who wanted to be involved in the community. She has received many awards for her efforts in volunteering, from being inducted into the Hall of Fame at her alma mater Olds College for her community involvement and volunteerism, to being awarded the volunteer of the year award twice by the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Beyond her time as a volunteer, Nellie has played a role as a leader in the community for over half a century, including her time as a leader in the Benalto Brownies and teaching Sunday School at the Benalto Presbyterian Church. Nellie also played a pivotal role in the presentation of the history book “Along the Burnt Trail” and creation of its follow-up “Bridging the Century.”
She is also a Charter Member of the Evarts Community Club.

Jennifer Blair
Communications is the key to success in every avenue of life, from personal relationships to our professional ventures. She did not grow up on a family farm, but the agricultural industry has been the impassioned focus of her 10 year career and her excitement for it is unyielding and contagious. As a reporter for the Alberta Farmer Express, Jen is passionate in all areas of agricultural journalism. Jen is a voice connecting farmers and ranchers around the world with the stories that are important to them, from hard hitting stories on abuse allegations at a hog facility to the newest innovations for crop yields. Outside of her professional persona, Jen is an exemplary member of the Red Deer community. She is a community activist, reporter, writer, storyteller, horse enthusiast, and pug mom. Whether she is taking to her yoga mat for meditation or wading through fields of manure for a story, Jen is truly a woman of excellence.

Monica Morrison
Currently the Executive Director for the Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre in Red Deer, Monica has been an advocate for senior recreation and fitness for 26 years. She is a certified senior fitness trainer and has recently collaborated with the Bowden Penitentiary support team to work on a National Pilot Project, to train inmates to be Senior Fitness Instructors to promote wellness of other adults while in the judicial system. Monica was also approached to co-instruct a Physical Activity & Older Adults course at RDC, providing valuable content to the course curriculum. She believes that all seniors deserve a good quality of life till the end of their journey and works hard with her staff and community partners to ensure that senior issues and service gaps are identified, and works hard at finding solutions.

Dr. Katherine Atchison
After graduating from medical school in Saskatoon, Dr. Katherine Atchison has been practicing in the medical field for 22 years. She holds specializations in general family practice, obstetrics, pediatrics and hospital inpatient care and has served as mentor to resident doctors for the past 16 years. She is a member of the Sexual Assault Response Team, administering the medical care required for victims. Dr. Atchison was also the department health and wellness physician for the Red Deer Emergency Services, including both mental and physical health of all the employees and their families. She has consistently gone above and beyond for her patients, earning a reputation as both an attentive and caring doctor, especially in obstetrics. She is married with two sons and enjoys doing crafts, reading and gardening.

Kelly Tibbets
Kelly is the founder and creator of Red Deer’s “The Princess Ball”. In 2009, Kelly’s daughter Rowan was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at only 3 weeks old. In 2011, exhausted and still trying to come to terms with Rowan’s diagnosis, Kelly knew she had to find a way to raise awareness and money to search for a cure. The first Princess Ball happened in 2012 and since then, nine other sister events have been held across Canada raising more than $600,000 for CF research. Last year, Kelly was recognized as the founder of this event and awarded the Western Canada Leadership Award by Cystic Fibrosis Canada. The community of support she has built includes 3,000 guests and donors. Kelly is also a certified Yoga Instructor and owns the Love Yoga Grace studio in Red Deer.

Kathleen Finnigan
For the past 30 years, Kathleen has been a teacher, school counselor, vice principal, principal and now the Associate Superintendent of Inclusive Learning at Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools. Kathleen received her Bachelor of Education and Masters of Arts in Education. Kathleen has left a legacy for creating positive learning environments within school communities, including the development of the first fine arts school in Central Alberta, the implementation of a Sports Excellence Academy and development of the ESL Neighbourhood School Concept. Kathleen has also worked in team to develop a division wide literacy focus, implemented a model of inclusive education, restructured school counseling teams and created the Model of Student Support. She has been recognized for several awards including the Distinguished Service Award from the Central Alberta Council on School Administration and the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Melanie Warren
Melanie is Owner/Partner of Millerdale Pharmacy, Urban Olive Trading Company, and Therapeutic Lifestyle Essential and as such, has built her companies as a conduit to support and develop her community in health and wellness. Melanie has utilized her companies to support many community agencies such as the Woman’s Outreach Centre, Breast Cancer Society, and Aspire. She has served as both Steering Committee and Board Member for the Ronald McDonald House. At the age of 39, she also competes in natural fitness competitions, placing second in her division. Melanie embodies the true spirit of entrepreneurship and philanthropy. She is truly generous and selfless, and is always looking for new challenges to conquer, and meaningful opportunities to help her community and its members meet their goals.

Blayne West
Blayne was born and raised in rural Saskatchewan where her passion for the environment and all things natural began at a very young age. After graduating high school, Blayne obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Land Use and Environmental Studies in 2001 from the University of Saskatchewan. She pursued a career in the field of Environmental Management and was lucky enough to experience a combination of travel and work across the globe. Blayne has volunteered and worked in Canada, South America, Australia and England. Blayne returned to Canada in 2011 with her husband where she has been working for Lacombe County as their Environmental Coordinator. She also began her own consultancy in 2013 where she taught others how to establish Environmental Management Systems for their organizations.

Cherilynne Purpur
Since graduating from the University of Alberta, Hospital School of Nursing in 1970, Cheri’s Nursing career has taken some unusual paths. Arriving in Red Deer in 1975, she established a local branch of La Leche League International. LLL is a volunteer organization which supports and guides mothers and families in all aspects of breastfeeding. Cheri has not only helped hundreds of local mothers and babies, but nurtured and developed other woman to become LLL Leaders. Her passion for mother and baby wellness led her to become active in Childbirth Education and Midwifery – eventually opening her own Midwifery practice in Red Deer in 1991. In 2004, Cheri moved to the other “end” of lifespan nursing and has focused on Palliative and End of Life Care. Currently, she is the Nurse Manager at Red Deer Hospice where for the last 7 years she has been privileged to participate in the successful development of this facility.

Beverly Keeshig-Soonias
Beverly is a registered psychologist with a unique combination of life experience, theoretical background and inspirational personal attributes. She is an aboriginal woman and a member of the Chippewas of Nawach First Nation. She is married to Rod Soonias, L.L.B., a member of the Red Pheasant First Nation. Her parents and family members are survivors of Indian residential schools. She is a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Beverly has extensive knowledge about ‘wahkotowin’ (the business of being attached), the inter-generational and systemic effects of the Residential School Experience (intergenerational trauma), family systems, adolescents, addictions, and the power of healing. She has been working with adolescents and families for Heritage Family Services, since 1995, and volunteers for local community agencies such as Red Deer Native Friendship Centre and Central Alberta Diversity Association.

Poshika Dhingra
Poshika is a highly motivated and a people oriented person who loves to challenge herself. As a seventeen-year old grade 12 student, she is an extraordinary dynamic and talented leader. Apart from being an accomplished student who has received Honors with Distinction throughout high school, she volunteers her time at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, City of Red Deer, Canadian Blood Services and is an active member of the Student Leadership at School. She is among the few residents of Red Deer that have been selected for SHAD 2016 and continues to be a role model for the youth of the city. She is a recipient of Violet Richardson Award 2016 and on a national level, the Future Aces Citizenship Award 2016.

Dorothy Dickson
Dorothy Dickson has long been an admirer and staunch advocate for the natural world. She has been involved with recycling programs and used pesticide container collections. She has worked with school curriculums to get more natural history into the schools, as well as teaching classes in elementary schools and helping teachers with projects. She has contributed to Red Deer Vision 2020 and other City planning documents. She has worked long and hard protecting our National and Provincial Parks as well as Natural Areas. Perhaps the best way to sum up Dorothy’s work for the environment is what was written about her when she received the prestigious Douglas H. Pimlott Award and Honorary Lifetime Membership with the Canadian Nature Federation: “Dorothy is a tireless worker, deeply admired and respected by naturalists and environmentalists throughout Canada. Her decades-long efforts have educated and inspired teachers, youth, naturalists and Canadians to learn about nature and work towards its protection”.

Elna Edgar
Elna is a passionate farmer, who has always been involved in agriculture in the Innisfail area. She was a 10 year 4-H member, who won efficiency & club week awards. After graduating from Olds College, Elna and her husband Doug worked the family farm, Edgar Farms, while raising two daughters. She spearheaded the diversification of the once traditional farm, creating the largest patch of delicious asparagus in Alberta, as well as 30 acres of other vegetables, all hand-picked and marketed direct to consumers at Farmers Markets & her farm store. To offer an “on farm experience” for customers, Elna created a hugely popular annual Asparagus Festival. She also increased productivity of the cow herd through selection, herd health, record keeping and breeding and markets all natural beef. Elna believes in the value of co-operative marketing; helping create and manage Innisfail Growers’ Coop and Country Drive. She volunteers extensively for Little Red Deer Dorcas Women’s Institute, Little Red Deer Hall Board, Innisfail Agricultural Society and Innisfail United Church. Elna has won many awards, as part of Edgar Farms, including Farm Family of the Year, Farm Direct Marketer of the Year and Innovation in Agriculture.

Ellen Corea
Ellen grew up in Calgary and graduated with a degree in Fine Arts and Media Research from the Alberta College of Art in 1977. She also attended the University of Calgary, Emily Carr Fine Arts College and the Ontario College of Art. Ellen is a loving wife and the mother of two adult children and a proud grandmother. Despite having a full and busy family life Ellen continues to dedicate her time professionally and through her volunteerism to developing and promoting the arts. Currently, Ellen sits on several boards and committees including the Lacombe Arts Endowment Fund, serves as Treasurer for the Lacombe Performing Arts Centre Foundation and the Cranna Community Cultural Centre (C4) Initiative. Ellen is also involved with the Lacombe Historical Society and the Lacombe Heritage Steering Committee. Ellen is the Regional Archive Coordinator, Tourism Coordinator and Bookkeeper with the Lacombe and District Historical Society, and is also the Bookkeeper for the Lacombe Chamber of Commerce.

Arlene Hjertaas
Arlene lives by her belief that exercise is fundamental to good health. She also believes the best exercise is the one you’ll do! Soon after being introduced to Jazzercise in 1988, she obtained instructor certification and opened the first Jazzercise class in Red Deer. Her goal has always been to consistently teach safe, effective, motivating classes to help her customer’s live healthier, happier lives through fitness. Her skills and knowledge as a Registered Nurse have been a very beneficial part of the journey. Arlene works as the Senior Advisor for Occupational Health Nursing for Alberta Health Services in the Employee Health & Wellness Department. She is married to her husband Randy for 35 years and is a mom of 2 daughters, Erin and Aubree. Arlene has been a resident of Red Deer since 1987.

Michelle is the Small Business Advisor at the Rural Alberta Business Centre in Rocky Mountain House. She is dedicated to the success of all businesses in Rocky Mountain House and surrounding communities. Her vision and enthusiasm have brought recognition to our communities through her work on the Central Alberta Business Innovation Conference, the Small Business Incubator model, high school business programs and community networks. From one-on-one business coaching to community showcases, Michelle is the driving force behind the success of small rural business and has renewed an excitement in the business communities of Central Alberta.

Tanya Schur
Tanya is a Blackfoot-Metis mother of two grown children. She holds a MA in Leadership Studies from the Royal Roads University, Victoria. Her focus of research was “creating harmony in diverse work groups”. Tanya is currently serving as the Executive Director of the Red Deer Native Friendship Centre; she follows the traditional teachings of the medicine wheel and is committed to Aboriginal community development and the empowerment of Aboriginal people. Tanya has worked tirelessly in the Aboriginal community to build a governance model that the community would endorse and be able to utilize to work on issues affecting the Aboriginal community. This initiative has now grown into the Red Deer Aboriginal Voices Society. Tanya is leading the Assoahum Centre Project, which is the affordable housing and cultural centre project envisioned by the Aboriginal community.

Linda Moore Martin
Linda graduated from the Queen’s University Nursing Program with a BScN in 1979. She worked as an educator at Red Deer Regional Hospital for a year before embarking on her career as an educator in the nursing program at Red Deer College. Linda taught nursing for many years before becoming the Chair of the Nursing Department. Linda completed her Master of Nursing degree from the University of Calgary with a focus on Women’s Health. For the past six years, Linda was the Dean of the Division of Health, Science, Sport and Education, and this past year has been the Dean of the restructured RDC School of Health Sciences. Linda has maintained her registration and is proud to be a registered nurse.

Brenda Kolasa
Brenda’s entrepreneur career began in 1994, when she started her company, Visual Resolve Graphics. Over time she recognized that entrepreneurs faced similar issues – specifically a platform that offered businesses a reliable resource network. Her passion realized this unique concept in 2013, when she introduced Success4Business. This online Consortium and Annual Business Expo offers a range of resources: expert/ mentor consultations, a diverse business directory, plus quality speakers, seminars and workshops. Acting as Producer and Facilitator, Brenda helps other businesses to grow and succeed. Brenda is actively involved in several organizations including Rotary Club East, Red Deer Leads Executive Association, Red Deer & District Chamber of Commerce, Red Deer Business Networking Group Meet-up, and the Professional Women’s Network. Brenda received the Rotarian of the Year Award, from the Rotary Club East, two years in a row (2010 and 2011). Born and raised a Saskatchewan prairie girl, she became a proud Albertan in 1984. Brenda is married and a busy mother of two energetic teenagers.

Dorothy Dickson
Dorothy Dickson has long been an admirer and staunch advocate for the natural world. She has been involved with recycling programs and used pesticide container collections. She has worked with school curriculums to get more natural history into the schools, as well as teaching classes in elementary schools and helping teachers with projects. She has contributed to Red Deer Vision 2020 and other City planning documents. She has worked long and hard protecting our National and Provincial Parks as well as Natural Areas. Perhaps the best way to sum up Dorothy’s work for the environment is what was written about her when she received the prestigious Douglas H. Pimlott Award and Honorary Lifetime Membership with the Canadian Nature Federation: “Dorothy is a tireless worker, deeply admired and respected by naturalists and environmentalists throughout Canada. Her decades-long efforts have educated and inspired teachers, youth, naturalists and Canadians to learn about nature and work towards its protection”.

Brenda is currently the President and CEO of Futures Resources Partners Inc., a human resources consulting company. She is a visionary, solutions focused strategist with 30 years of multi-faceted experience in operations, strategy development, leadership, change management and high-profile relationship management in multiple Provinces in Canada. A resourceful, passionate, high-energy leader and mentor with infectious enthusiasm and persuasive presentation and communications skills. She is adept at building high performance teams that leverage existing strengths and embrace continuous innovation to create customer focused value-add services for clients. Brenda’s background includes twenty-five years in public sector health care and education, primarily focusing on providing leadership and direction for building sustainable organizations. She is a leader in the development of many tools for planning, managing and evaluating people practices in organizations. She holds a B. Admin, MBA and Certified Human Resources Professional Designation, along with many certifications in the fields of health care, facilitation and human resources consulting. Brenda has served on provincial and national committees, authored articles on sustainable workplaces, and attended as guest speaker and panelist at many public sector events focusing on the state of our workforce and innovative strategies for attraction, engagement, retention and succession planning.

Ethel Suarez
Ethel has been a board member and volunteer for Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E.) for 34 years. Ethel and her family came to Red Deer in 1977 as political refugees. Since then, she has always been a champion, an inspiration and role model for immigrants and refugees in our community. As someone who had to flee her native country of Uruguay, she knows the challenges of adapting to a new country. Her mission has always been to help immigrants to adapt and integrate in Central Alberta. Ethel did that by volunteering for Amnesty International and as a volunteer translator for the RCMP, the courts, the hospital and other institutions. Her efforts have contributed to help building a stronger multicultural community. She was a recipient of the Mayor’s Recognition Award in 2012 and the Stars of Alberta Volunteer Award in 2011.

Kaitlin is a community builder, volunteer and gem in the community of Lacombe. Kaitlin graduated from Burman University (formerly known as Canadian University College), with a degree in Business Administration in April of 2015. During her time in school, she helped organize Serve Lacombe, with over 200 faculty, staff and students volunteering their time for 22 different community projects in Lacombe and area. She volunteers as a swimmer with Special Olympians, a writer/reporter and volunteer for A Better World, nonprofit organization improving the lives of people in 3rd world countries, a 4-H Public Speaking Judge, Founder/ Director of Change for Change, and a grade 3 teacher in the Marshall Islands. She is a positive influence and role model in our community for volunteerism, embracing diversity, and creating cross-cultural opportunities

Eileen Cole
Eileen came from a family that believed community involvement was important, and volunteering has always been the “natural” thing to do, whether organizing the Ladies luncheon for the Lending Cupboard, teaching Sunday School, dancing at seniors lodges, working political campaigns, or volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House Charity Bonspiel, Eileen’s interests are wide, varied and lengthy.
Following her retirement from owning a successful small business called Children’s Corner, Eileen accepted a 16 month full-time volunteer position as Coordinator of the Firehall Fun Factory which was as integral part of the $2.5M Literacy & Legacy campaign for the Children’s Library. Eileen’s next challenge was to organize Red Deer’s very first Festival of Trees on a zero budget! She continued organizing this event for the next eight years. Twenty years later, the Festival has raised nearly $10.8M for healthcare programs and equipment for the Red Deer Regional Hospital Foundation. For the next three years, Eileen was the Health Region Foundation liaison for the Healing and Hope Campaign which raised $2.5M to fund the Interfaith Chapel and meditative garden at the Red Deer Regional Hospital. Eileen is a master organizer. Eileen leaves a lasting legacy with her extensive leadership and support of our community.

Melanie Tuck
Melanie’s passion for her career and helping her clients will be the first thing you notice when you meet her. Every day, she learns and continues to develop and share her skills and knowledge with her clients, as a mentor to students and fellow therapists. Since 1989, she has worked high level sports including; Western Hockey League, Division 1 Rugby, Junior & Senior Men’s football. She has also treated many professional athletes. She is also a community leader in concussion awareness and treatment, working with the latest technology and research. A ground breaking female trainer in hockey, she opened doors for other female trainers, as the first female trainer in the Western Hockey League. She spent 10 years as a Founding Director with the Alberta Sport Development Centre/Central. Melanie opened Collegiate Sports Medicine in 2003, due to a tremendous need in the region to assist high level athletes.

Gwen Clarke
Gwen moved to Central Alberta in 1997 and has worked at Nova Chemicals Joffre Petrochemical Site for 17 years. She is married to Wayne Clarke and a mother of two children, Bobby and Katie. Gwen holds a Bachelor of Communications degree and is currently a communications consultant dealing with internal and external communications and community relations for Nova Chemicals Joffre Site operations. For more than 15 years, Gwen has served and continues to serve the United Way fund raising campaign in many capacities from Community Impact Council to campaign cabinet. Gwen has her fingers in many other initiatives in our community, and believes strongly in the value of building relationships and allowing everyone the opportunity to be all they can be. She believes that growing young philanthropists is not just a desire, — it is a responsibility.

Valdene is a vivacious volunteer who believes in giving to the community that has given so much to her. She has tirelessly volunteered for the Foundation for Red Deer Public Schools, Red Deer Public Library, Red Deer Childcare Society and United Way of Central Alberta. She was employed for 13 years by Family Services of Central Alberta as their Manager of Community Relations. She now works for EQUS, the largest member owned utility company in Canada, as their Marketing and Communications Coordinator. Valdene has built bridges in the community to ensure that the citizens of Red Deer have the opportunity for the best life possible. She is currently volunteering on the Canada Winter Games 2019 Bid Committee. She loves to laugh, live life to the fullest and loves all that Red Deer has to offer.

Delta Rempel
Family, community and faith have been guiding rods in Delta’s life with such an extensive list of accomplishment over the length of her life. Delta grew up on a farm outside Consul, Saskatchewan. Some of her most treasured memories are her days on the farm which she considers to be the most important in shaping her life. In 1967, she and her husband Wayne moved to Red Deer. When Wayne was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Delta sought employment to supplement the family income and support the activities of four young children. She started working for the United Way in 1976 and continued until June 1997. Delta’s presence has also been felt at her church, where she serves on several councils and committees. The congregation became Delta’s second family and has been a source of support. Delta’s volunteerism continues to have extensive reach into the community of Red Deer. She is the Board Chair for Golden Circle Senior Resource Centre; participates in the Healthy Families Program, which she initiated in 1998 and the Alberta Generations Project.

Helen is a gracious compassionate woman, who always reaches out to serve others. Her gentle and kind nature, make others feel comfortable around her. Helen is a qualified teacher with more than 35 years experience in Central Alberta. She has assisted immigrants and refugees at Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E) for over 25 of those teaching years through English as a Second Language (ESL) and as a language assessor. She also spent several years teaching in the public school system. Because of her significant contributions to the field of ESL in Alberta, she received the Dawn Seabrook de Vargas Memorial Fellowship Award in 2010. Her positive and helpful attitude make immigrants and refugees, new to Central Alberta feel welcome. Helen’s display of affection and compassion is evident in both her professional and personal life.

BJ Tumanut
Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, BJ moved to Edmonton in 1997, where she enjoyed a successful career in fine wine as a buyer, seller and educator. In 2002, BJ swapped her wine glasses for fine chocolate and managed the popular Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut stores in Edmonton. Chocolate was a great fit for her. In January 2011, BJ moved to Red Deer to purchase and operate the local Chocolates by Bernard Callebaut business. She feels fortunate for the opportunities her life in Red Deer has given her. She has grown as a person, businesswoman and community builder. BJ gives back to our community as a volunteer board member with Rotary Red Deer Sunrise Club and the Red Deer Chamber of Commerce. She also works to raise funds and awareness for local organizations such as the Red Deer Regional Health Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, United Way of Central Alberta and the Ronald McDonald House.

Joanne Temple
Joanne has worked as an Environmental Educator in Alberta for the last 20 years. She is a native Albertan with a background in the Biological Sciences, growing up and raising her family in the Calgary area. She developed the educational programs still being used today for the Glenmore Park Weaselhead Preservation Society. In 2006, she and her husband moved to Lacombe where she took a few years off to go back to school at Olds College, upgrading her education to include landscape design where she focused on best management practices for water conservation. In 2012, she became the outreach coordinator for the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance, developing educational programs for schools, relating to the Alberta curriculum and for public awareness and engagement as well as stewardship.

Dr. Jennifer Bestard
Born and raised in Thorndale, Ontario on a dairy farm, Jennifer is the eldest daughter of Ted and Fran Bestard. After completing high school, she began her long and very successful journey to a career in medicine. Her Studies took her to the Universities of Western Ontario, Toronto, McMaster University, University of Alberta and University of Calgary. She is the first Canadian neurologist to complete a Fellowship in neuropathic pain and headache at the University of Alberta. Jennifer moved to Red Deer in 2009 and commenced her own neurology practice where she continues to practice medicine, deliver seminars/ lectures and is an active participant in her community. She was the first physician in Red Deer to implement new Health Canada Botox Guidelines in the treatment of chronic headache pain, demonstrating cutting edge treatment of this debilitating condition. She is a wife and the mother of two beautiful little girls. Jennifer enjoys a number of fitness activities, including competitive marathon, and other hobbies.

Rubyann Rice
Rubyann is the Provincial Executive Director of the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta (SSA). Rubyann earned a Master of Educational Psychology from the University of Alberta and has more than twenty years of experience in the human services field. Fifteen of those twenty years have been in a senior leadership role with non profit and government organizations. Managing a provincial organization comprised of six branches and three housing projects across Alberta keeps Rubyann at the heart of current mental health issues. Rubyann has been acknowledged for her relentless work providing exceptional housing and support programs to those living with severe mental illness. Rubyann was recently selected as a finalist in Homeward Trust’s ROOPH Awards, acknowledging individuals committed to ending homelessness. As a dedicated advocate and educator, Rubyann values a community that demonstrates compassion and respect to all.

Mary Gardiner is a brilliant and compassionate visionary who embodies the term ‘Women of Excellence’. A pioneer in the field of Mental Health, Mary’s diverse career in Nursing has spanned over four decades. A renowned innovator in education, she collaboratively initiated the “to hear it with your hands flagship” clinical preceptorship program currently in practice in our province. She has devoted her life to the service of others. Mary is a diligent researcher, published author in Canadian Journal of Community Mental Health and historian with her book, Then and Now. A high-energy dynamo, Mary is active in all facets of health and wellness in our community. She has volunteered on numerous boards and is the honored recipient of many awards. As an alternative to retirement, she developed curriculum and was instrumental in the establishment of a Primary Care Health Services Network for nurses across the Northwest Territories. An accomplished tennis player, Mary has won gold medals at the world level and is the ultimate ambassador for this sport. She lives life with passion as a nurse, educator, wife, mother, grandmother, author, tennis champion, volunteer and mentor extraordinaire. Mary is an exceptional role model whose legacy of employment and enrichment in our community and beyond is truly profound!

Sheila Bannerman
Sheila Bannerman has been a key figure in Red Deer’s heritage community for more than 30 years. Born and raised in British Columbia, Sheila moved to Red Deer in 1982. After raising a family of 3, Sheila attended Red Deer College in 1999 to complete her B.A. in English. While attending RDC, it took just one course for her to “fall in love with history”. She was hooked, and took every history class taught at RDC. Sheila’s passion for history is reflected in her many leadership roles in several heritage organizations in Red Deer. She is a member of the Central Alberta History Society since 2008, serving as President over two years. In 2008, Sheila joined the Heritage Preservation Committee, chairing the committee and participating in the planning of Veteran’s Park in downtown Red Deer. Sheila currently serves as an executive member of the Red Deer & District Museum Society Board. Her most recent volunteer role as Chair of the Centennial Committee has realized a year- long celebration of the events as the City celebrates 100 Years in 2013. Sheila’s commitment to our cultural heritage will leave a legacy for many future generations.

Kay Kenny has 35 years of full time commitment in sport, recreation, parks, and culture. Past employers- Calgary, Grande Prairie and now Red Deer garnered the benefit of Kay’s expertise, proficiency, skills and knowledge. While all of those traits of Kay’s are significant, her passion for recreation is her driver and she leads in this sector both as a professional and as a volunteer. She is committed to utilize recreation, sport, culture and parks as the conduit the conduit to build healthy lifestyles. Kay’s endeavors have a positive influence and impact in our community of Red Deer, regionally, provincially and nationally. As the City’s Recreation Superintendent or the Chair of the Alberta Sport Recreation Parks and Wildlife Foundation, you can be certain that this woman is a leader, making a difference for all of us.

Working for Central Alberta REA since 1992, Pat has been the driving force behind the Rural Electrification Association (REA) movement. Through her passion, her determination and foresight REA’s have strengthened and become more successful, ensuring that farm families receive the lowest power prices possible. As the General Manager of EQUS, the newest and largest member- owned utility in Canada, Pat oversees 75 staff members who serve 11,500 members. Pat is energetic and driven, setting the bar high for herself and others around her. She is committed to personal and professional development and encourages everyone around to pursue similar goals. Pat has been active on organizations including the Ridgewood WI, Ridgewood Hall, Girl Guides of Canada, Poplar Ridge School and the Innisfail Big Brother Big Sisters.

Robin Armitage
Robin was born breach after three days in labor. Her mother called her Robin because she was like a breath of spring. Robin loves to learn and does so every chance she gets. She learned that in life, you have to stand up for what you believe in even when it wasn’t the popular thing to do. She made sure she excelled in everything she did and even worked in non- traditional female roles before it was acceptable– as a manager in a men’s wear shop, as a welder’s helper and as a financial planner, paving the way for those who more commonly accept those roles. Robin sent her son to the first French immersion school and bore much criticism in small City Red Deer. She fought for money for Red Deer minor hockey for kids who couldn’t afford to pay (even to the point of crying at a meeting, much to her chagrin) and was among the initial supporters of Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES), Soroptimist International of Central Alberta and Magdalene House. The most important things in her life are her family, her faith, friends and she has formidable belief in “paying it forward”.

Shirley Challoner
Shirley was born and raised in a farm just outside of Edmonton. She graduated from the University of Alberta- School of Nursing and has been in the nursing profession for over 30 years. She retired in 2002. Shirley has received various awards and recognition for both her professional and community contributions. She received the Longtime Service Award in 2003 in recognition of her more than 30 years in the profession of nursing. She also received recognition for being a Red Deer College Arts Centre Front of House Volunteer for 20 years as well as the Mayor’s Citizen of the Year Award in 2001. Currently, she still volunteers for the RDC Arts Centre, Ten thousand Villages, Lending Cupboard, Sunnybrook United Church and Central Alberta Theatre. She says that her passion for social justice is because of the influence of her parents who followed and lived by Frank Buchman’s teachings, “There’s enough in the world for everyone’s needs but not enough for everyone’s greed. If everyone cared enough and everyone shared enough, everyone would have enough”.

Judy Dorland has been instructing and choreographing dance and musical theatre for over three decades and is an accredited instructor, adjudicator, and national Examiner (a status reserved for Master Dance Instructors) through Associated Dance Arts for Professional Teachers (ADAPT). She formerly operated the successful Dancentral Studio. Since 2009, she has been the Artistic Director for Strive Dance Academy, a not- for- profit society, whose students achieves top overall rankings at provincial competitions and performs throughout the community. Her students have achieved international success in their professional careers in theatre film and television; and, have included athletics in other sports such as figure skating and baton twirling who have enhanced their training and gone on to win Olympic medals and World Championships.

Katherina Cummins
Katherina Cummins opened her first Medi-Spa in Red Deer Alberta in 2004, expanded and moved into the historic Coca-Cola building, within one year. With no certified Aestheticians in Alberta, Katherina applied to Board of Education to open an Aesthetics Laser School. She bought the building expanding Body Treats Medi Spa and adding new treatment and staff. In 2009, Katherina opened the first Aesthetic Laser School in Alberta here in Red Deer, The Medi Aesthetics Institute of Canada. This year, she opened a second Aesthetics Laser School in Sherwood Park AB. Katherina has attended numerous courses in New York, Toronto, Victoria, Edmonton and Calgary, always striving for academic excellence both for herself her schools and students. She is very involved in the community donating supplies to the Outreach/Youth/Homeless shelters. She has a scholarship program for women getting into the work force, taught adult dance classes and donated her salary for a needy child to be able to take dance classes. She is involved with the Community Garden Project, her spa donates coupons for free services each year to the Women’s Shelter.

Beverly has a vision, which is foremost, to be a role model for her daughters. She believes you learn about yourself and others through open eyes and a giving heart. Through adventure and travel one can understand people and their cultures and become more accepting of differences. Beverly believes women are inspirational leaders and exemplifies this in her community. She is the Deputy Mayor of the Summer Village of Norglenwold, chairs numerous committees including the Sylvan Lake Art Society, the Sylvan Lake Management Committee, and the Norglenwold Municipal Planning Commission. A former Senior Manager with the Government of Alberta, and Executive Director with the Red Deer Watershed Alliance, she is now the Executive Director of the Association of Summer Villages of Alberta.

Jan has made an amazing impact on the community in and around Red Deer as the Public Awareness Cultural Consultant/Coordinator since joining Central Alberta Refugee Effort (C.A.R.E) in May 2002. As an advocate and leader at C.A.R.E, she delivers intercultural training, providing support and information in regards to immigration, settlement, multiculturalism and community development. These presentations are making a difference in the lives of immigrant children, students and adults and focus on cross cultural awareness, communication, sensitivity, human rights, anti racism, and multiculturalism. She is a strong and positive advocate of inclusion and integration. Jan is indeed an inspirational and dedicated person who has focused her personal work life on making a positive impact for people in Central Alberta.

Lifetime Achievement Recipient
Doris Jewell
Doris has been a community builder for 90 years! From her days as a student leader; to being a wife and a mother; successful business person; community leader and role model, Doris has always made a positive contribution to the well being of Red Deer and Central Alberta.
The impact of Doris’ community building in Central Alberta began when she and her husband, Robert arrived in Red Deer in 1949. Doris supported her husband in growing his business. Doris also started two businesses of her own, and raised four children. Through her keen interest in the world around her, Doris became immersed in activities and projects that enabled Red Deer to grow and prosper over the past 60 years.
Some of these include: serving as a City Councilor 1971-74; Red Deer College Board of Governors; Founding Director (Treasurer) of the Red Deer Symphony in 1987; and Chair of the Building Committee for the Arts Centre at Red Deer College, opening in 1986 (a jewel in the cultural life of our community). Doris and Molly Bannister founded the Red Deer International Folk Festival in 1968 (now known as Canada Day Celebrations).
Doris is described as an inspiration; a delightful person; and someone who leaves a significant record in Red Deer.
Lifetime Achievement Recipient
Marguerite Schumacher
Pursuing her passion as a nurse since 1941, Marguerite had a vision that was ahead of her time, particularly regarding nursing education.
From the beginning of Marguerite’s own nursing career, she was interested in teaching students, in developing good clinical instructors and in balancing theory classes with practical training. Marguerite is an innovator, with the courage to break new ground and a change agent par excellence.
Marguerite influenced nursing education throughout Alberta -specifically Red Deer College, across Canada and internationally. She established a two-year nursing program at Red Deer College (RDC) in a college setting, rather than the usual three-year hospital based program. Marguerite’s core values for this program included the importance of caring and communication in the nurse-patient relationship, and of life- long learning. Her philosophy in a nutshell is, “Healing is affected by the interpersonal relationship of the nurse with the patient.” The same values continue to be the core of the nursing program at RDC more than 40 years later. This is a tribute to the legacy begun by Marguerite which is effectively passed on by so many of the faculty she hired, as well as their students. Especially since some of these students have become nursing instructors at RDC and continue to pass on these core values to the current generation of nursing students! Marguerite’s vision lives on!

Val Jensen
Val Grew up in Central Alberta and has touched the lives of many throughout the years. She started Dance Magic Studio in 1989 and watched it grow to be Red Deer’s largest non-competitive dance studio. She sold the business in 2009 with more than 800 students, after nurturing thousands of young people to do their best. She lived and breathed the motto of her business—“Dance Magic—Where Everyone’s A Star”.
Val has always embraced active living and lifelong wellness. Her very being exudes energy and a passion for living life to the fullest through active experiences. Whether it’s skiing, dancing or running, Val’s focus is inclusion and skill development – all while having fun. Val is an accomplished tri-athlete with medals and accolades of her own, and has trekked to Mount Everest Base Camp. This is also evident in a number of initiatives she volunteers to put together like the Woody’s RV World Triathlon, Alberta Summer and Winter Games, Jumps and Bumps Ski Program and her most recent event, the Mother’s Day Run. Val is a mother of three outstanding children and grandma to one granddaughter.

Deb Comfort
Deb received her degree in Recreation Administration with a major in Community Development from the University of Alberta, and Recreation Administration Diploma from Red Deer College. Deb is currently the Supervisor for Neighborhood Facilities and Community Development, within The City of Red Deer’s Recreation Section. With over 25 years experience in building community, Deb’s big picture thinking and skill at bringing people together to explore new possibilities and asking the “why” are renowned and respected. Deb’s intense passion for enhancing the quality of life in the community drives her career, family and leisure activities.
In her current role with The City, Deb served as a catalyst in the development of the Sport Council of Red Deer. She brought a multitude of sports organizations together, to have them explore their common hopes, challenges and dreams. Deb’s professional affiliations include Canadian Parks & Recreation Association; Alberta Recreation & Parks Association, where she has also volunteered since 1989; and Alberta Association of Recreation Facility Personnel. Deb has also been involved with the Oriole Park Community Association. She is married to Doug Vesely, whom Deb says has helped her achieve all her accomplishments. Deb is a mother to three children, Sam, Allison and Max, who are all very in involved sports, culture and school activities.

Tosha Duncan
For over 14 years, Tosha’s energy and passion have been dedicated to the field of social work. She holds a Bachelor of Social Work Degree from the University of Calgary, and maintains professional registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
Tosha’s career began as a Family Support Worker, providing assistance to ‘at risk or vulnerable’ individuals struggling with a multitude of issues including: exposure to family violence; substance abuse; and mental health. This is where Tosha discovered her passion for family violence issues. At that time, Tosha returned to university to complete her degree in social work, with a strong focus on crisis intervention and trauma. Afterwards, Tosha continued her career as a Crisis Worker, Domestic Violence Support Coordinator.
In 2006, Tosha was hired by the Red Deer Domestic Relationship Violence Initiative Committee to work in the Red Deer RCMP Domestic Violence Unit. This position is unique – making Tosha the very first social worker to be employed within an RCMP detachment in Canada. She works with police to assess risk and to develop case management strategies. The primary goal is enhancing service delivery to victims of domestic violence, while holding offenders accountable for their actions.

Barb McKee
Barb has a unique talent of making everyone she works with and meets feel like they are important.
Barb works with the City of Red Deer in Recreation Administration. A graduate from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Physical Education, she has always been a strong supporter of community recreation. Barb’s involvement in community organizations and events is vast: Woody’s RV World Triathlon & Kids of Steel; Morrisroe Community Association; Olympic Torch Relay Celebration; served as Games Manager for the 2006 Alberta Summer Games; and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Barb’s attention to detail, outstanding service and never ending compassion for others have made a difference in our community. Barb is a dedicated wife, mother of two, mentor, volunteer and valued friend. Barb’s strong relationships, endless energy and exceptional people skills have helped build on our community’s positive environment to make it even better! Barb’s enthusiasm is contagious! Her peers, and fellow volunteers, are fortunate to have the privilege of being part of her busy life.

Jodi-Lynne Goodrick
In her current role as the Assistant Superintendent of Student Services for the Red Deer Public School District, Jodi is responsible for all student support services within the region. Jodi works collaboratively with cross ministry initiatives and determines supports and services necessary for students with diverse learning needs from pre-K to Grade 12. Jodi builds capacity of Student Services and school based staff to meet the needs of diverse learners and is responsible for systemic changes to facilitate inclusive programming for all students.
A dedicated educator, Jodi works diligently to provide a quality inclusive education experience for all students regardless of physical, cognitive or behavioral challenges – no exceptions! Jodi grew up with a severely disabled older sister who has inspired her to lead the charge with the Inclusive Model of Special Education provincially. She has a wealth of knowledge and experience and is a gift to all students and their families, especially those faced with multiple challenges.
Jodi is a recognized educational innovator at the local, provincial, national and international levels. Jodi is an exceptional woman of passion who strives to live her life with intention. Truly a treasure in the lives of our community’s children.
Entrepreneurship Recipient
Dr. Joelle Johnson
Dr. Joelle Johnson was born in England and immigrated to Central Alberta as a child. She grew up and went to school in Red Deer. At the age of 19, Dr. Joelle had a ski accident that caused severe life threatening injuries. The recovery period was long, and the injuries led her into the chiropractic profession as she received great benefits from chiropractic care.
In 2009, Dr. Joelle established “Family First Chiropractic and Wellness” which provides chiropractic, massage, natural health products, orthotics, and a weight loss program. The name says it all – family!
An amazing role model for the young women she sees in her clinic every day, Dr. Joelle not only provides extensive medical knowledge, but also mentors young people by job shadowing; and one on one lunch meetings to encourage future career choices. She is known to lend expertise to other women in business, offer her clinic for meeting space, and is a guaranteed ‘yes’ when approached for a silent auction item for a charitable event.
Dr. Joelle is a married mother of three and through her professionalism in business, leadership and generosity of giving makes the community of Red Deer a better place to be!

Kimberly Flunder
Kimberly is a dynamic and innovative Pharmacist with a passion for health and wellness. Using her extensive knowledge and expertise in Anti-Aging Medicine, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy and Compounding Customized Medications, she is dramatically impacting her patients.
Kimberly collaborates with local physicians on a variety of topics – Hormones, Adrenals, hCG, Nutraceuticals, Stress Assessments, Compounding. She has also facilitated the provincial government program “Do All Drugs Need Bugs” to nursing students at Red Deer College, promoting awareness on antibiotic resistance and the importance of hand washing.
People say that Kimberly’s dedication to the community does not stop at the end of the work day – she is involved and leads by example! Kimberly’s ambition to grow personally and professionally, as well as her genuine desire to serve and help others makes her a leader in her profession and a true Woman of Excellence!

Amanda Lindhout
Born in Red Deer and raised in Sylvan Lake, Amanda Lindhout is the Founder and Executive Director of the Global Enrichment Foundation (GEF). Amanda has gained international acclaim for her work supporting development and aid in Somalia – the country where she once spent 460 days as a hostage. Formerly a freelance journalist with a column in the Red Deer Advocate, Amanda’s concern for the humanitarian crisis in Somalia led her to the war-ravaged nation in 2008 where three days after her arrival she was abducted by teenage criminals. Following her release in 2009, she left journalism and became an unlikely and passionate advocate for the people of Somalia. Amanda founded GEF to ignite leadership in Somalia through education and economic initiatives that the organization develops, funds and implements. In 2011, for the first time since her abduction, Amanda returned to Somalia and led famine relief efforts for which she has raised millions of dollars. Since GEF’s inception in 2010, her award-winning humanitarian work has provided aid and education to over 300,000 people living in the war-torn country. Amanda’s work has attracted the attention of President Bill Clinton, who invited her to speak at his Clinton Global Initiative in April 2012. Her personal commitment to Somalia has been supported by influential international organizations and companies such as the United Nations Association and Google, and this year the WXN has nominated her for a 2012 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 award.

Megan Hilz
Megan’s interests and passions include playing and composing her own music on the piano, participating in her church, caring for the environment, working with children, learning, reading, writing, mentorship and leadership.
Some of Megan’s achievements include academic excellence throughout High School, Honors in Grade 5 Conservatory Piano and Basic Theory Rudiments. Megan implemented, coordinated and managed the Yellow Fish Road Project – a partnership between Notre Dame High School and Holy Family Elementary School. The purpose of this environmental engagement project is to teach children about their role in watershed conservation. As a result of Megan’s efforts, she received the Watershed Ambassador Award. For her genuine compassion for people, Megan was presented the Christian Citizenship Award. And for excellence in leadership and initiative at Notre Dame, Megan received Leadership 15 and 25 Awards. Those around Megan have described her as a reliable, honest, intelligent and genuine young person with a warm and inviting manner – truly a young Woman of Excellence.

Kylie Morrison
Kylie was born in Red Deer; eldest of three children – and learned early on, by her parents example, to be part of the community.
Affected by epilepsy her entire life, Kylie found a place to contribute with The Epilepsy Association of Calgary – Central Alberta Office. She is a volunteer for the past 10 years – on duty for public education displays in the malls, the hospital and at Red Deer College where she attends in the Early Learning and Childcare Level 2 Program. Kylie also assists with fundraising activities to further the mission of the Epilepsy Association.
Kylie has a great empathy for marginalized individuals – she leads by example, encouraging others to grasp life. Kylie advocates on behalf of persons with a developmental disability through her volunteer involvement with The Hub on Ross. Kylie also volunteers with Central Alberta Refugee Effort (CARE) and is a member of the Social Awareness Group at Red Deer College. Kylie’s energy is also directed homeward by supporting her blind grandmother and quadriplegic sister.

Lyn Radford
Lyn Radford is a dedicated wife, mother, daughter and friend, as well as a valued community member. Lyn thrives on giving back wherever needed. This is not limited to family and her local community; it extends beyond the city limits as evidenced by the award of the Alberta Centennial Medal and her involvement in provincial initiatives like the Alberta Summer Games benefiting youth throughout the Province. Lyn shares her values with people in our community on a daily basis, developing new community volunteers in the process. She is an advocate for children, the Aboriginal community and those who are not able to challenge the system for themselves. Lyn is known in Red Deer as a lady who makes things happen with unmatched determination to follow a project through to success.

Carol Kelly
Carol Kelly was born in Moncton, NB. Her father was a Chief in the Canadian Navy, which caused her family to live throughout Canada, including Ottawa, Gander, Churchill and Aklavik. Her high school years were spent in Bermuda. Carol married Grant Kelly in 1972, moving to Alberta in 1976 and is the proud mother of two children. Carol has always been a “starter”. She has had a love for animals since childhood, owning numerous pets throughout her adult life. She began an SPCA while in Newfoundland, but expanded to wild animals when she founded her true passion, Medicine River Wildlife Centre, in 1984.

Marguerite Watson
Marguerite Watson has been a key member of Red Deer’s heritage community for more than 30 years. A native of Red Deer, her passionate interest in local history is reflected in her lengthy and extensive involvement in almost every heritage organization in Red Deer. As a Lifetime Member of the Red Deer & District Museum Society, Marguerite’s dedication will leave a significant legacy. Her leadership and support have directly contributed to a vibrant arts and cultural history community. Her lifetime commitment is an inspiration to all, especially her family of four children and ten grandchildren.

Mellisa Hollingsworth
Mellisa grew up as a country girl on a ranch, raised around horses while hanging out with cowboys and cowgirls on the family farm. When Mellisa was not pursuing excellence in a multitude of sports, she was often and still can be found riding horses or taking in the local rodeo. Prior to her skeleton career, Mellisa ran track and played basketball at a provincial level. She was introduced to skeleton and the idea of the Olympics by cousin, and two-time World Skeleton Champion, Ryan Davenport. Mellisa won the Overall World Cup title in 2006, and slid to a historic bronze-medal finish in Torino at the Olympic Winter Games. She finished 5th in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and is set to chase Gold in 2014! She is an athlete ambassador for Right To Play and is passionate about Ronald McDonald House in Central Alberta.

Gail Surkan
Gail Surkan followed a well-beaten path from Saskatchewan to Alberta after she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan in 1969. She and her husband Roger put down roots in Red Deer, raised their children and became committed to the community and to Central Alberta. Gail found her calling in community work and became heavily involved as a volunteer with neighbourhood, business and City organizations. Ultimately she gravitated to civic politics, spending six years on City Council before becoming Red Deer’s first female mayor in 1992. Gail retired from the Mayor’s position after twelve years, but continues to invest her time supporting and leading organizations, both public and private, which are important to Albertans, to the community of Red Deer and to the future of her family. Gail has received several awards for community service including the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellowship, the Alberta Centennial Medal and the Red Deer College GH Dawe Memorial Award.

Colleen Jensen
Colleen Jensen received her degree of BSc Home Economics from the University of Alberta and a diploma in Public Administration from the University of Western Ontario. She is currently the Director for Community Services for the City of Red Deer and has worked within the City’s Social Planning Department for 14 years. Colleen learned the value of volunteerism early, sitting on the UofA Student’s Council and Student’s Union Policy Board. A resident of Penhold, she has volunteered with school councils, the Penhold Recreation Board, and was chair of the Penhold and District Public Library. She finds that her greatest achievement is being a mom to 2 daughters and a grandmother to 3 granddaughters with one on the way. She believes that the skills of great leaders are the same skill set as every mom: to listen, encourage, support, make hard decisions, assess, be strategic, give “a boot” when needed, wipe tears, provide hugs or simply being there.

Rita Kemp
Rita Kemp has very quietly devoted her life to her family and community, in spite of serious health issues in her life. She is never idle, whether working at home or serving her community through involvement in the church as a Sunday School teacher, on the Board, as an elder, and as a member of the regional Presbytery. Further, she has been involved with 4H, the Innisfail Historical Society, and was the founder/curator of the Dr. George/Kemp House Society. As a young girl, Rita was unable to complete her high school education due to illness. It was always a goal she craved. Although she attended the Olds School of Agriculture, receiving her diploma in 1953, she was still interested in completing high school – which she did while raising her family through correspondence courses and attending the Innisfail High School. She graduated in 1973, at the same time as one of her daughters! Rita has written two books to preserve memories of the past!

Dawna Morey
Dawna assumed her role as CEO of Community Information & Referral Society in 2006, after 23 years of working in the field of public education and private consulting. Dawna is a graduate of the Leadership Networks Program and holds a certificate from SFU in Community Economic Development, and a certificate in Public Policy. Dawna has volunteered extensively, sitting on the Board of Directors of the Red Deer & District Community Foundation for 8 years, and as President of the Parkvale Community Association. Presently, Dawna sits on the Board of the Association of Information and Referral Societies of Alberta, the national board for Information & Referral/211 and is the Chair of Community Services with Sunrise Rotary. Dawna is happily married to Gary McCaskill and together they have 4 children, 1 son and 3 daughters, as well as 6 grandchildren. She said she has two passions: her family and her community. She said, “the love for my family gives me the drive to make my community a better place to live”.

Anna Robertson
Anna’s life is exemplary of commitment to one’s community! Her endeavors have made a lasting impression on the youth, organizations and rural community she has been associated with. She works tirelessly, not seeking or needing recognition. She has diverse interests that blend in her volunteer and professional life. Anna is skilled in the field of interpretation, natural history, working with museums and national parks throughout Western Canada. Currently, Anna works with refugees and immigrants, teaching English as a Second Language. She has benefited her community through her varied extensive volunteer work, including forming The Friends of Kerry Wood Nature Centre, initiating a rural playschool, and volunteering as a Girl Guide Trex leader, giving teenage girls the opportunity to pursue varied outdoor activities.

Marian George
Marian George grew up in Ontario but has lived in Sylvan Lake for the past thirty years. Trained as a Registered Nurse, Marian worked part time for the Red Deer Health Unit as a Home Care Nurse in the Sylvan Lake and Eckville areas for ten years. In 1996, she completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing while working as a Public Health Nurse and Home Care Nurse for the David Thompson Health Region. In 2002, she graduated from the UofC with a Master of Continuing Education, Specializaiton Workplace Learning. During the same year, Marian began working at Red Deer College in the Nursing Department. Currently, she is teaching in the UofA Collabroative Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at RDC and enrolled in Doctor of Education, Specialization in High Education Leadership at UofC. Marian is a married mother of 3 daughters and grandmother of 5 who enjoys gardening, travel, and exploring for “bugs” with her grandchildren!

Gloria Beck
As owner of the Parkland Garden Centre, Gloria Beck has become known locally, nationally and internationally as a successful businesswoman. She has served on many industry boards, was president of the Canadian Nursery Trades Association and the first female and non-European president of the International Garden Centre Association. She has served as director of the Chamber of Commerce, Community Savings & Credit Union and was recently appointed to the Olds College Board of Directors. Gloria was one of Red Deer’s first female Rotarians and the first woman to become club president. She received an Olds College Honorary Degree in 2004 and the Alberta Centennial and Centennial Silent Angel Awards in 2005. She has supported Big Brothers & Sisters, the Women’s Centre and is currently working with the RCMP and RD Rebels on Project Keep Straight. Gloria is a mom, a grandmother and a mentor/role model for women in our community.

Jytte Roy-Poulsen
At the age of 18, Jytte Roy-Poulsen emigrated from Denmark with her husband. She started work her second day in Red Deer and hasn’t stopped since. Jytte held many jobs, owned and operated a dance studio and when her husband passed away suddenly, assumed the management of their drapery business. In 1974 she moved her two daughters to Kansas City where in 1977, she received her Chiropractic degree. She returned to Red Deer in 1980, establishing her practice in 1981. In 1989 she received her Naturopathic degree from the Ontario College of Naturopathic Medicine. Jytte has had significant impact in her field, serving on various professional associations, breaking ground as one of the first naturopathic practitioners in Alberta. She has also had significant impact on the health and lifestyle of many Central Albertans. She has taught seminars at high schools and other venues, and has volunteered for many years with the Red Deer Symphony and the Danish/Canadian Society.

Martha Cortes
Martha and her husband arrived in Canada from Colombia in 2000, fleeing for their lives after having been kidnapped and tortured by terrorist groups. In 2002, she brought her five stepchildren and her brother and family to Red Deer. Since coming to Canada, Martha has volunteered for many organizations such as CARE, CAIWA, and CADA to help the people in her community get connected. She has worked diligently with all immigrants and newcomers to try and help establish their lives and overcome obstacles in Red Deer. Martha has a Masters Degree in Education from Universidad Santiago de Cali and currently works as an Immigrant Domestic Violence Rural Outreach Worker for the Central Alberta Women’s Outreach Society.

Stephanie Fung
Stephanie was born and raised in Red Deer. An honour student throughout her elementary and high school years, she was also actively involved in sports and music, organized charity fund-raising activities, volunteered with the Chinese Society, mentored Chinese International Students and taught private piano lessons. At age 15 she was selected as a youth ambassador for Rotary International and spent a year in France. She established life-long friendships and learned to speak French while promoting Canada to Rotary members and youth. Stephanie is currently studying Marketing and International Business at UBC. There, she has taken on various leadership roles including mentorship of first year and international students. She worked last summer at the Downtown Business Association and was involved with CenterFest, Fiestaval and The Hub on Ross, using her musical and collaborative skills to help produce a booklet about Red Deer’s ghost statues.

Doris Towers
Doris Towers has focused most of her life on family, community and public service. With her husband Gordon serving as a Member of Parliament in Ottawa for 17 years, she virtually single-parented their 5 children. She was a gracious and tolerant First Lady of the Province when Gordon served as Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor, always demonstrating an active interest in the accomplishments and affairs of the people she met in that role. Our local community has also benefited greatly by her presence and hard work. She has served in leadership roles within her church and has been affiliated with the Westerner in the Creative Arts Division for over 25 years. Whether in Red Deer, Edmonton or Ottawa, Doris has always been a wonderful example of leadership, presenting herself with style, grace, compassion and unfailing love.
Agriculture and Environment Recipient
Susan Manyluk
Susan studied Agriculture at the U of A in the late 60’s, one of only four women enrolled in the program at that time. She and her husband bought property in the Poplar Ridge area and Susan has been farming there for almost 35 years. As the primary farmer in the family, she eventually built a cow/calf operation of over 300 animals. Susan was an early proponent of the “eat local” concept and has contributed thousands of hours to local organizations and to agriculture in general. She has always been a strong believer in reinvention and diversification as the key to sustainability in agriculture. In 2000 she opened HolmeHus Antiques, a large shop located on the farm selling antiques, free range eggs, garden produce and beef. Susan continues her direct involvement in the community and by her own actions, “gives permission” to other women to try things that are different, to take the road less traveled and to follow their passions.

Trudy Golley
Trudy Golley received her BFA (Ceramics) at the Alberta College of Art and the University of Calgary, and her MFA from the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Australia. She has participated in ceramic residencies, lectures, and provided workshops in Canada, USA, Australia, Denmark, China, Hong King and Malta. Trudy was inducted into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2002 and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. Her work is represented in numerous public and private collections, most notably Alberta Foundation for the Arts, Winnipeg Art Gallery Permanent Collection, Canada Council Art Bank, Calgary Civic Collection, Canberra School of Art, and Shanghai’s Changshou Sculpture Park. Trudy teaches Ceramics in the Visual Art Department at Red Deer College.

Jeanine Van der Sluijs
Born in the Netherlands and having moved to Canada in 2001, Jeanine van der Sluijs is the head coach of the Meadow Creek Vaulting Club. As well as teaching gymnastics, she organizes an annual series of winter vaulting clinics, organizes an annual vaulting competition, teaches a weekly adult fitness class and, with her sister, operates the Creekside Equestrian Centre. She has been competing in equestrian vaulting for most of her life and also attended the National Circus School in Montreal in 2006 where she completed the Preparatory Circus Program. Vaulting is not about jumping horses – it is actually gymnastics and dance type movements performed on a cantering horse! Jeanine recently competed at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games, held in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. This was her first time competing at the World Championships – and she placed 18th in the Individual Women’s Division – the highest placing for a Canadian vaulter in a World Championships ever!

Carolyn Martindale
For 30 years in Red Deer, Carolyn Martindale has demonstrated strong leadership at work and in the community. She has moved up the ranks at the Red Deer Advocate and, for 23 years, has been its city editor. While continuing to work full-time, she achieved her Masters of Leadership degree. Senior management is now reviewing her thesis recommendations on how to capitalize opportunities at the Advocate. Her commitment to her workplace and colleagues is foremost in Carolyn’s efforts. Carolyn is recognized for being an initiator, recently encouraging Advocate staff to participate in an online fitness challenge, enrolling in training courses, volunteering at the Red Deer nursing Home, and running in nine half-marathons.

Donna Carter is the Senior Lead of Volunteer Resources for Alberta Health Services – a position where she has demonstrated excellence in leadership for over 20 years. She implemented the first regional volunteer program in healthcare in the province, and continues to promote and strengthen the role of volunteerism and the profession of volunteer resource management. Key to Donna’s accomplishments are her passion and her belief that volunteerism contributes greatly to the well-being of the community. Donna has lived, worked and volunteered in Red Deer for over 20 years. Married to Don, they have two sons and one adorable grandchild. She is also a support person for her aging parents. Donna takes care of herself by exploring her artistic side and keeping physically fit.

Glorene Ellis
Glorene is an energetic lady who puts her heart into everything she does. For many years she has been instrumental in bring the Arts to Stettler. She has directed, produced and starred in several drama productions. She has also promoted music in the community as pianist and director of community music including music festivals, church music, concerts and other competitions. Her skills as a carpenter have been well put to use in many stage productions. She has volunteered her time with several organizations including the Moms and Tots group at the United Church. She was one of the first Help Line Coordinators in Stettler, helping to house many seniors. In addition, she coached young athletes as they mastered their skills in ball and soccer at the Stettler Rec Centre.

For thirty years, Denise has been a dedicated teacher, currently serving as the Vice Principal at St. Francis of Assisi Middle School. Not only is Denise an experienced teacher who aims to make learning fun, she believes that equality should exist for all students in a safe and caring environment. She leads with fairness and kindness and aims for enthusiasm and participation from her students. Most notable is Denise’s commitment to living the principles of her faith and to sharing that gift with others. She is recognized as an outstanding master-teacher and as living a servant-leadership style that is inspiring to all around her. Denise is an awe-inspiring educator, community leader and role model. She is highly aware of the needs of others and is selfless when determining how she can use her abilities to contribute to those less fortunate. Denise is wife to Jan and mother to three young adult daughters: Jennifer, Michelle and Deanna.

Tanya’s successful professional career across Canada in stage, radio and television prepared her to share her passion in Red Deer as a college theatre instructor, actor, director, volunteer, and arts facilitator. Tanya’s innovations include ground-breaking social action theatre programs for youth, including Butt Ugly and Inside Out: Body Image Theatre Education. She also offers unique opportunities to playwrights through Scripts at Work. While enthusiastically encouraging others’ creativity, Tanya has found time to direct over twenty shows and perform in a wide variety of media and venues. Tanya continues to learn formally and informally as she embraces the delightful risks of her craft. In doing so, she is an inspiring role model to students and emerging artists in the community and beyond.

Judy was born in Taber, Alberta. Since moving to Penhold over 30 years ago, she has made a difference to Red Deer and her community through her commitment to families and children. As an employee and volunteer, she has committed to helping children and families. Through a long career in the early childhood field, to outreach work with individual families, to a leadership role at Family Services of Central Alberta, Judy has shown commitment to the families of Central Alberta. For the past 4 years, Judy has coordinated the Central Alberta Children’s Festival, with several community partners, which has provided family fun, learning engagement and cultural entertainment to over 15,000 Central Alberta parents and children. Married to Rick, she has two grown children.

Dr. Lynne Paradis is the Associate Superintendent – Learning Services with the Red Deer Catholic Regional School Division. She graduated with a Doctorate in 2001 and a Master of Education Degree in 1984. She has a strong interest in the professional development of teachers and promotion of lifelong learning. She has taught K-12 and has been a principal in elementary, high school and cyber school. She has done considerable work in the areas of professional development, professional learning communities, assessment for learning and curriculum implementation. She speaks at many conferences and facilitates teacher and leadership workshops on a variety of topics aimed at effective instruction and improvements in student learning.

Alyson Thiessen
Realtors would always give her a deal and say “If you can’t do it, nobody can!”. Alyson was always a Get ‘Er Done Girl – and the company and brand was formed in 2006. By 2008, Alyson had grown her company to generate over 125 million in mortgage placement. Her personal mandate is to help other women grow their business and income earning potential so that their opportunities for success are truly unlimited. The economic and mortgage crisis of 2008 imposed a dramatic shift on Alyson’s business. The unavoidable challenges of the recession forced Alyson to re-evaluate how she would do business and how she could continue to best serve her clients and the remaining members of her team – which went from 17 to 3! Although this change was devastating initially, Alyson emerged successful! In 2009, she recreated her company, rebranding as The Get ‘Er Done Girls Inspire Mortgage Solutions – with the brokerage now being fully independent and with a staff of ten women working throughout Alberta and B.C.

Ann’s approach to life is summarized in this statement: “I trust that the universe will unfold as it should and think when given an opportunity for doing – there is meaning in it – something for you to give and share”. Ann received her BFA With Distinction with a major in drama and minor in dance from the University of Calgary, and the community of Red Deer has benefited from her tireless volunteer contributions in the music, drama and yoga “worlds”. Besides her role as wife and mother of 3 children she has served on the Red Deer Symphony board including 2 years as president, volunteered with Central Alberta Theatre and extensive volunteer activity with the local Yoga Yard – a non-profit studio.

Veena Chandra
Veena immigrated to Canada in 1970 and moved to Red Deer in 1989. Her own settlement challenges inspired her passion of assisting new immigrants and refugees. Her enthusiasm, energy and leadership working as CARE’s Executive Director for fourteen years have been an inspiration for newcomers, staff, volunteers and the community. She initiated and expanded numerous essential programs and services for newcomers. This led CARE to receive several awards, such as “Citation of Citizenship” and “Minister’s Award for Municipal Excellence”. Veena also serves and volunteers on local and provincial boards. Her compassion, dedication and ability to successfully assist newcomers are commendable. Her vision is to support immigrants and refugees with their integration and create a welcoming and inclusive community.

Rebecca is an energetic and optimistic self-taught musician and artist, growing up in Innisfail and moving to Red Deer when she was 12 years of age. She has been an honour roll student – winning academic awards as well as in music, art, and athletics. An experienced song writer and performer of music, Rebecca knew at a very young age that music would play a large role in her future – one of her goals that she set for herself and her music is to inspire people! She loves to perform – hoping to make people happy, which makes her feel good too! Rebecca’s biggest hero and roll model is her Aunt Pam, who instilled a work ethic and drive to succeed in Rebecca, who believes that her life’s experiences have caused her to become a more loving, understanding and harder working individual who can impact people’s lives by being an example of how looking on the bright side can change your life!

Hazel Flewwelling
Hazel has a lifelong commitment to learning, literacy and community building. She taught within the Red Deer Public Schools Division for years, helping mold young individual’s minds. She is in the forefront of numerous fundraising events for the Red Deer Public Library, Alberta M.S. Society, the Gaetz United Church and Central Alberta United Way. She served on several boards including the Red Deer Chapter, M.S. Society of Alberta; Swiss Canadian Club and the Red Deer Public Library. She assisted her husband in the founding of the Red Deer & District Community Foundation, is a Leadership Donor to the United Way and a donor of art works to the RDC Permanent Art Collection and the University of Lethbridge. She has been awarded Red Deer Citizen of the Year in 1992; Woman of the Year by the Red Deer Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi in 1994; Canada 125 Medal for Volunteer Leadership in 1992 and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2003 for Community Service and Volunteer Leadership. She is married to Mayor Morris Flewwelling and a mother of two sons.

Evelyn is a retired school teacher who has lived most of her 87 years in Central Alberta! Teaching for over 30 years, she provided great learning experiences and instilled confidence and self-esteem in her students as well as colleagues. Evelyn’s remarkable qualities of enthusiasm, energy, and commitment along with her organizational skills and high standards, have made her an extraordinary community builder. She loves life and people and thus her community has been enriched with her generous sharing of time, talents and treasures. Evelyn is seldom in the limelight, choosing instead to work quietly and effectively behind the scenes. Her tireless dedication to the betterment of her community has resulted in an enviable role for family, friends and community at large.

Dianne Finnestad
Dianne began her radio career in 1981 at a small radio station in Taber, Alberta. Along with regular newscasts and reporting, Dianne was called on from time to time to do Agriculture reports. After 4 short months, Dianne moved to Red Deer to become the agricultural reporter for CKRD and its two affiliated radio stations. Over a 25 year period, Dianne saw her assignment grow from weekly to daily, being broadcast on a number of stations. She also hosted a successful rodeo program. Dianne’s expertise and interest in the agricultural sector was not an accident – her family farm south of Medicine Hat marked its 100th anniversary in 2009. Dianne is currently working for KG Country, continuing to provide broadcast opportunities to agriculture and rodeo regionally.

Glynis Wilson Boultbee
Glynis has worked and volunteered for a variety of community arts organizations. As Project Coordinator for Arts a la Carte, and the first organizer of Artsparks, she has been committed to taking the arts out to individuals who may, for a variety of reasons, not normally have access. She also teaches numerous courses on creativity and wellness, and creativity in the workplace. Glynis enjoys arts activities herself and has at various times been involved in writing, directing, drumming, storytelling, and the visual arts. She has collaborated with visual artists to create exhibits that incorporated her poetry, and has also had a solo show of her altered photographs. Glynis believes strongly in the power of the arts to contribute to the wellness of individuals and the community as a whole.

Sadie Braun
Since arriving in Red Deer in 1971, Sadie has exemplified excellence in the performing arts. Her energy and enthusiasm have been inspiring as she served as choir mistress and organist of the Sunny Brook United Church and director of the Red Deer Chamber Singers over many years. Her volunteer spirit has led her to start a Music Scholarship Fund that supports RDC music students. She served on the RDSO Board and was involved with the local group of the Association of Registered Music Teachers of Alberta. She inspired countless piano students to excellence and many pursued music careers. All of this was achieved while juggling her role as a nurse and along with her husband, raising three children.

Colleen Manning
Fitness and wellness are Colleen’s passion that she shares, encourages and promotes with her family, friends, clients and community. Despite undergoing open-heart surgery at age eight, Colleen has never shied away from athletics and has always striven to realize her personal potential. In addition to working as a fitness and Pilates instructor, she has maximized her Bachelor of Physical Education degree by coaching and teaching young women in our community towards an active, fit lifestyle. She has also designed many fitness, wellness and healthy living seminars, each targeted at a diverse array of people such as school children of all ages, seniors, office workers, golfers, other fitness instructors and amateur competitive athletes.

Marg Phelan
Born and raised in Red Deer, Marg has devoted her life to the economic development of the region – as well as ensuring recreational activities and opportunities exist for community members of all ages! She has volunteered for a diverse group of organizations such as Alberta Sports Hall of Fame & Museum; Chambers of Commerce throughout the region; 4-H; Alberta Centennial Awards; Swim Alberta; Sylvan Lake Sailing club; Red Deer Tourism as well as Big Red Deer, 2006 Alberta Summer Games; and the 1998 Alberta Winter Games. In addition to downhill and cross-country skiing, running, and sailing, Marg currently owns a pottery studio, and actively participates in art shows and theatre events – her mission is to build community throughout the sectors!

Andrea is a proven healthcare leader currently in the role as the Manager of Public Health Nursing for Alberta Health Services. She has a record of strong, effective leadership in program planning and operations, and has experience as an inter-sectoral collaborator. Andrea leads her professional and personal life with a commitment to excellence, excelling at any project she undertakes. She is a committed community member volunteering with the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta, the Red Deer School Lunch Program, the Rotary Club of Red Deer, and she spends countless hours ensuring the success of the Rotary International District Youth Exchange Program. Andrea presented her Masters thesis at an International Health Conference in Oxford, England, and received the David Thompson Health Regional Excellence in Leadership Award in 2007.

Barb has over 20 years experience in the delivery of career development services and has been the Director of Career Assistance Network since its inception in 1996. She has a Diploma in Rehabilitation Counselling and extensive experience working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. While some clients have employment barriers (social limitations, psychological, physical, or developmental impairments), her business specializes in providing a range of short-term employment and educational supports to mainstream Albertans. Anyone is eligible to receive work search training, interview practice, resume and portfolio development services. Safety Training and Career Planning Workshops are also available to people who are exploring and expanding their employment or educational options.

May moved to Red Deer 22 years, married husband Carl at Gaetz United Church and together have successfully blended their wonderful family. Volunteering and learning whatever she can has always been May’s motto. Many opportunities have come May’s way and she has enthusiastically reached out and grabbed them. Whether May is working at a museum, writing newspaper articles, managing a business, or doing whatever work her job entails, May has always found time to volunteer in a variety of community organizations. She mentors people – she is always there! May takes all of her positions to heart, examples being winning Business of the Year Award for Sentinel Self-Storage as well as receiving the “Silent Angel” award for her many years of volunteer efforts.

Wendy Klassen
Wendy was born in Red Deer and raised on a farm west of the City. Educated in Social Work, Wendy has worked in a variety of capacities within the community work environment for the past 35 years. She has worked in front-line, management, as a volunteer, and as a consultant. Her work has involved all age groups, and a wide range of sectors – education, health, social services, mental health, non-profit organizations, municipalities, public system departments and authorities. Wendy single parented her son for a number of years and is now enjoying a blended family with her husband! She spends personal time reading and gardening, but spends most of her spare time with her “collection” of family and friends!

Paulette Hannah
Paulette exemplifies excellence in education with a career long in its dedication to the promotion of learning, leadership, and achievement. For 38 years, Paulette’s career has taken her from shaping the minds of young learners in a rural elementary school setting to that of an influential community leader and CEO of the Red Deer Catholic Regional Division. Paulette’s interest in lifelong learning and leadership extends into the community with her position as a member of Red Deer College’s Board of Governors; membership with the College of Alberta School Superintendents Provincial Executive; and Education Partner with the Education Research and Development Corporation. She is currently completing a Doctor of Education at the University of Calgary.

Jane Proudlove
Jane’s experience and passion for working with children and families facing special challenges has resulted in her volunteering with many Red Deer agencies, such as the Youth and Volunteer Center, Central Alberta Special Equestrians, Wood’s Homes, the College of Physical Therapists of Alberta, the Mayor’s Task Force to End Homelessness, The Leadership Centre, Red Deer College Board of Governors, Parkland Youth Homes, and the Red Deer & District Community Foundation. She has also made several international trips to a variety of destinations to offer rehabilitation consulting services to schools and orphanages caring for children with physical disabilities. Jane’s most treasured moments are the weekends she spends providing respite care for children with special needs – something she has done since 1989.

Kim Berube
Kim Berube is a leader and blossoming visionary who is continually inspired by women’s stories. In January 2007, Kim decided to publish a magazine, Real Women on the Run. New to entrepreneurship, with no experience in journalism, publishing, or sales, Kim embarked on an adventure in magazine publishing. Publishing is one of the most difficult business models to ensure success, but guided by her passion to show women positive role modeling – Kim has realized her goal and offered much to others along the way. Kim is a member of the accapella group – JazzCASUAL, she is a Community Liaison for the Lacombe Arts Endowment Foundation, she is active with both the Lacombe and Red Deer Chambers of Commerce and is a member of the Independent Achievers – Red Deer.

Sonya Sawyer Schaab
Sonia is the co-owner and sales manager of L.A. Radio Group Inc – the only woman in Canada to co-own and operate two radio stations in a market the size of Central Alberta. The current broadcasting landscape in Canada is extremely corporate, with few independent radio stations still in existence. Sonia has played an enormous part in re-shaping Red Deer and Central Alberta radio by creating new and fresh ideas for both her clients as well as the industry – her single biggest achievement being the creation of L.A. Radio Group Inc, operating Sunny 94 and KRAZE 101.3. L.A. Radio Group currently employs 35 staff. Married, with two busy children, Sonia has volunteered her time to both the Lacombe and Red Deer Chambers of Commerce, the Lacombe Figure Skating Club and Lacombe Minor Hockey.

Judy Boyd
Judy came to Red Deer upon the completion of her teaching degree, where she majored in High School Education. After three years teaching at that level, a career change to ECS allowed her interest in nature to develop, which led to her work over the years with the Kerry Wood Nature Centre and the Medicine River Wildlife Centre. Judy has volunteered with many environmental organizations throughout the region, such as Red Deer River Naturalists, and the Federation of Alberta Naturalists, focusing on programs such as the Nature Nursery, Young Naturalist Club, Red Deer River Clean-Up among many others. She currently is writing a bi-weekly article about birds for the Central Alberta Life newspaper.

Sandra MacDougall
In addition to her work as an instructor at RDC, Sandra has done significant innovative research and has developed environmentally focused courses that are being offered internationally. Receiving a recent Special Projects grant allowed her to further develop expertise in road ecology as she undertook an underpass monitoring study along the QEII. A busy mother of three, Sandra balances her family demands with significant research and college contributions. While working at RDC, she completed her Masters degree in Environmental Design at the University of Calgary. Sandra has provided her students with unique opportunities, allowing them to develop an interest in a career of ecology by learning how to analyze and process data, and present materials of a complex nature in a clear and fluent manner. She fearlessly takes on new challenges and works hard to make all projects successful.

Jennifer Vanderschaeghe
Jennifer arrived in Red Deer in 1999, continuing her long standing commitment to people living with HIV. Currently the Executive Director of the Central Alberta AIDS Network Society, Jennifer’s work as an advocate for consumers – and agencies providing supports to the marginalized people in our communities – has found her providing leadership to agencies like the Red Deer Housing Committee, Safe Harbour Society, Central Alberta Rainbow Youth, the United Way of Central Alberta, and most recently, chairing the Red Deer Native Friendship Centre Board and the Everyone’s Home Advisory Committee of the Red Deer & District Community Foundation as Red Deer pursues its goals to end homelessness by 2018. Jennifer has worked provincially, nationally, and internationally learning and teaching other volunteers from diverse backgrounds about the importance of wellness and health in all aspects of our community.

Brenda Watts
Brenda was raised in Rimbey, Alberta, the youngest of three. After marrying a farm boy and moving about the province, she “came home” to settle in Central Alberta in 1983. Brenda obtained a Business Administration Certificate and worked with her husband in administration and finance capacities in family businesses. After raising her own family of three, she completed her Psychology Degree. Experiencing the deaths of both parents by the time she was thirty-two opened her eyes and heart to the world of grief and loss. Brenda “knew” that she needed to work in the field of death and dying. As Executive Director of the Red Deer Hospice Society, Brenda is dedicated to assisting clients and their families as they navigate end-of-life.

Halima Ali
Halima was born in Somalia where, prior to emigrating, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education and helped set up educational programs for rural and refugee women. When she immigrated to Canada in the 1990’s with her husband and son, she worked for COSTI, an immigrant settlement organization in Toronto. Halima now champions immigrants in Red Deer as the Executive Director of the Central Alberta Women’s Immigrant Association (CAIWA). Because of Halima’s vision, her commitment to hard work, and the ability to work with and inspire her staff, CAIWA now offers programs in computer skills, health and wellness, civic participation, home instruction for parents of preschool children, and family violence and bullying. Halima is a graduate of The Leadership Centre, speaks three languages, and volunteers on three boards.

Raye St. Denys
Since arriving in Red Deer in 1996, Raye’s work as the Executive Director of Shining Mountains Living Community Services has provided training for non-Aboriginal service providers as well as a heightened level of community based services for marginalized members of the community. Developing the first mobile outreach and harm reduction program in Red Deer, Ray donated her own personal RV to ensure that adequate food and blankets were available for people experiencing homelessness or struggling to feed themselves and their families. Raye initiated the purchase of the first apartment block in Red Deer to be owned and operated by an Aboriginal agency, providing second stage affordable housing for women who have experienced violence and/or addictions. Working provincially and nationally, Raye has elevated awareness of aboriginal communities living with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C.

Erin Konsmo
Erin is a dynamic and talented leader who has achieved more at her young age than many do in a lifetime. Erin’s commitment to her community and to the many organizations she is a part of sets such a positive example for young women and she constantly strives to create awareness and involve others. She is a former member of the Red Deer College Board of Governors, won the RDC Outstanding Student Award in 2008, is a Past Board Chair of the Central Alberta AIDS Network and of the RDC Sociology Society, and was honoured nationally by the Association of Canadian Community Colleges with their Student Leadership Excellence Award in 2009. More important than her many awards and accolades is that this young woman is always willing to volunteer her time and talent to support organizations, events and even individuals in need.

Joan Donald
This Woman of Excellence Lifetime Achievement Recipient has also worked with her husband in a variety of petroleum marketing business and an investment and real estate company. Moving to Red Deer in 1964, they established Parkland Oil Products Ltd., which was sold in 1971. From 1977-2001 she was a Director and the Assistant Corporate Secretary of Parkland Industries Ltd. working in public and investor relations, Annual meetings and all Board of Directors planning. During that time, she served a four year term on the Board of Directors of the Alberta Energy Company Ltd. (now EnCanada Corp.). She is currently a Director of Parkland Income Fund and Vice President of Parkland Properties Ltd.
In addition to a highly successful professional career, this Woman of Excellence has made a tireless and never ending commitment to this community. She is a former member of the Board of Governors of Red Deer College, and a former trustee of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre Foundation Board. She was instrumental in starting the first Festival of Trees event in Red Deer, raising funds for hospital equipment and she Co-Chaired a very successful STARS Capital Campaign for Central Alberta. Over many years of tireless community service, she has been involved with organizations such as the Golden Circle, Girl Guides of Canada, Waskasoo Handicapped Riding Association, the Quarter Horse Association of Alberta, and the Canadian Cancer Society, Red Deer Unit Relay for Life.
She has worked diligently assisting organizations raise funds for the essential programs and services they provide to our community. Some of those projects include the Library Information Common at Red Deer College, Red Deer Hospice, and the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.
Her commitment to the Westerner Exposition has been long standing and exemplary! She chaired various horse shows for nearly 20 years, served on the Westerner Board of Directors and as President she organized the update of the Association by-laws, organized the hiring of a new General Manager, worked on strengthening the Board of Directors, instigated governance and guidelines to the operations of the Association, started the first Long Service Awards for the Westerner Employees and improved lines of communication with the community by the use of new releases and a quarterly newsletter. All of this was in her role as a volunteer! Amazing!
In 2002 this Woman of Excellence received the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in recognition of significant achievement and distinguished service to the community.
Lifetime Achievement Recipient
Mildred Munro
Involved in Pine Lake Sand and Gravel, a family business since 1960, Mrs. Munro was a part of a husband-wife team that built their successful aggregate processing business in the Central Alberta region. When her husband passed away in 1984, after a lengthy illness, she added her husband’s work to her own. Her son became very involved with the business and the two of them worked together until her son’s untimely death in 1991. This amazing Woman of Excellence demonstrated superior courage with that loss as she also had to endure forced legal shut down of the company during the settlement of the estate. At age 74, she restructured the company and begun operating it on her own, hiring some of her son’s former employees. Now– at age 91– this Woman of Excellence continues to operate this business. She works 8-10 hour days running the office and the production operations.
Among many other things, Mrs. Munro has been involved with the Delburne and Red Deer East 4H Clubs, has sponsored the Delburne Rodeo, donates to the Pine Lake Anglican church to assist with the maintenance of the grounds and the cemetery, volunteers and donates to the Pine Lake Hub community centre, is an active member of the Pine Lake Women’s Institute, supports the Clean Lake Society at Pine Lake, and worked tirelessly to try to prevent the landfill that was built near Pine Lake because she was concerned about the possible pollution to ground water and to a stream that empties into Pine Lake.
Mildred has demonstrated pioneer spirit and courage throughout her life. She finds time for family, friends, and volunteer work. Her ability to handle adversity and difficult situations while maintaining a positive focus is an inspiration for women everywhere. Her company is family oriented and she treats her employees with respect and consideration, allowing them flexibility and time off for family related events or difficulties.
She is extremely reliable, considerate and honest in business and in her personal relationships. She demonstrates that you don’t have to be “tough” to operate successfully in a male-dominated industry. Prompt, courteous service and a quality product that the company stands behind have kept her in business for 49 years!
As one of the letters of support for her nomination says…” in a work world of men, Mildred Munro showed that a woman can do what needs to be done to run a successful business, to contribute to the community and to do so without compromising her femininity. She truly has “broken new ground” and dissolved “old barriers” in a quiet, effective, and lasting way”.
Agriculture and Environment Recipient
Dale Christian
Dale and her husband farm along the Medicine and Red Deer Rivers. Dale was very active in the growth and production of their farm business, which was innovative in their time, bringing the first round baler to the community as well as a successful herd health program with purebred stock in their commercial beef herd. She knew that a progressive attitude proceed a successful business. Her family grew up to be farmers that share the attitude of healthy air, water, and soil. She believes you cannot have one without the others, nothing is more important that these three and they are needed for survival! Dale is very supportive of local community organizations that help people become informed of government, agriculture and environmental issues.
Arts, Culture and Heritage Recipient
Lynda Adams
Lynda received her Master’s degree from the Laban Centre for Dance and Movement in London, England, and has been actively teaching in the theatre studies facility at Red Deer College since 2002. When not on-site at RDC, Lynda is busy creating theatrical work with colleagues and former students across the country, assuming her role as curriculum director for Artstrek, a theatre program for teens or scheming on how to build on the success of Scripts at Work-Central Alberta Playwright Series, an initiative she co-founded in 2003. She is on the board of directors of both Culture Link and Prime Stock Theatre and was part of the creative team involved in staging the spectacular Red Deer downtown events for the 2006 Alberta Summer Games.
Athletics, Recreation and Fitness Recipient
Charlene Andrew
A fitness instructor, personal trainer, volunteer, and mother, Char Andrew has been a group fitness instructor for 18 years. Herself an accomplished tri-athlete, she initiated and led a beginner triathlon training group, overseeing the training of 100 women over the past 5 years. Through her work as a trainer/instructor, Char has empowered many women to continue on their fitness journey, contributing to overall health of the community. She volunteers in a variety of community events-leading warm-ups for charity fund raiser walks, encouraging others to attend events as volunteers and cheerleaders, has participated on the executive of the Red Deer Marlins Summer Swim Club as well as the Red Deer Go-Girls Program which exposes Grade 5 girls to the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle.
Business and the Professions Recipient
Sharon Eistetter
Working for Farm Credit Canada since 1979, Sharon serves as the District Director for FCC’s Central Alberta business unit, where she leads a team of 28 individuals, managing a loan portfolio of more than $800 million with 2,200 customers– the second largest district portfolio in Farm Credit Canada. Sharon is viewed as an inspirational and motivational leader who cares deeply about the success and well-being of her people. She is passionate about agriculture and her passion is shared with her team members– her mentorship and guidance has influenced many young agriculture professionals, particularly young women working in the agriculture industry. Sharon has been active in organizations locally (Scouts, Girl Guides, Agri-Trade) and with provincial professional associations.
Community Building Recipient
Jacqui Joys
Jaqui Joys moved to Red Deer in 2002. She quickly became involved in the community as a transferring Rotarian. Her experience in the performing arts resulted in her being hired to develop CentreFest– Red Deer’s first Street Performers’ Festival. Jaqui has also served on various boards: Central Alberta Women’s Outreach, the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and ultimately the Lending Cupboard. Being a newcomer herself, she developed the Newcomer’s 40+ group for women new to the city or having experienced significant lifestyle changes. In 2006, she founded the Lending Cupboard Society, whose mandate is to provide free medical equipment to the people of Red Deer and surrounding area at no cost, no qualifying and for as long as it is needed
Education and Training Recipient
Sheila McKay
Sheila has been a Registered Nurse for over 30 and has worked in a variety of practice areas including medicine, emergency, ICU and public health. Most recently she was Program Chair for the Red Deer College/U of A collaborative degree program where she is now an instructor in the first year of the program. In her role at RDC, she has not only provided great learning experiences to nursing students but has instilled a passion for the profession and a commitment to personal care. She has been a role model and mentor to other Faculty Members in health programs and many other programs at the college. Her enthusiastic and constructive approach to teaching and learning has been an inspiration to students and faculty colleagues alike.
Entrepreneurship Recipient
Shelley Ralston
Shelley started her career in the fast paced corporate world quickly climbing the ladder due to her natural ability to lead, and soon finding herself in roles such as the General Manager of Alberta at Xerox Canada and the Director of Alberta Public Sector at TELUS. In 2005 Shelley decided to leave the corporate world and enter into the exciting world of entrepreneurship by establishing Graden Systems, which in the past 3 1/2 years experienced 200% growth. Currently a Board Member of the Rotary Club of Red Deer, and a Board Member of the Women’s Leadership Foundation, she is also an Account Executive for United Way of Central Alberta, a member of the Alberta Chapter for Room to Read.
Health and Wellness Recipient
Dr. Maureen McCall
Dr. Maureen McCall has demonstrated a passion for family health, particularly women’s health issues, throughout her career as a primary care physician spanning over 20 years. She has extensive Canadian and international experience in sexual, reproductive and maternal health. Dr. McCall was instrumental in leading the establishment of a Sexual Assault Response Team at Red Deer Regional Hospital and serves as the Team’s Medical Director. Her commitment to health extends beyond Central Alberta to special international initiatives in Uganda, Laos, Nepal, Indonesia and Nicaragua. On the home front, she provides care for a significant number of immigrant patients from Central and South America and Asia.
Human Services Recipient
Patricia Turnbull
Patricia has worked in the human services sector since she was 15 years old! Her initial volunteer work was with individuals with developmental disabilities. She has worked in psychiatric hospitals and provided outreach services to individuals with disabilities. Currently the Executive Director of the Canadian Mental Health Association, she has encouraged a culture that treats individuals with dignity and respect, provided services in direct partnership with other organizations, spent the necessary time to build and maintain partnerships with organizations and individuals, and to create affordable housing units available for low income individuals and families in Red Deer. A past chair of the Red Deer Housing Committee, Patricia worked with the Mayor and City of Red Deer to establish a Mayor’s Task Force for Ending Homelessness in 10 Years.
Young Woman of Excellence Recipient
Aleah Ross
Aleah is a fifteen year-old Grade Nine graduate who has achieved Honours with Distinction throughout her education. She is an accomplished student, athlete and musician. She volunteers her time at the Red Deer Regional Hospital, the City of Red Deer, and the Red Deer Public Library, where she also holds a part time job as a Page. In her spare time she plays Violin in the Red Deer College Senior Youth Orchestra and raises money for many causes close to her heart, including wildlife conservation. Aleah lives her life with positive spirit, integrity and energy, and in the process, is a role model for all girls– she is the first one to celebrate the successes of others, or help a fellow human or animal in need.
